1. Identify additional support needs of staff members / 1.1 Use feedback from others and own understanding of team to identify individual staff members who may need additional support.
1.2 Consult identified staff membersto discuss challenges and barriers to work, and work needs.
1.3 Consult identified staff members to agree onadditional supports that address challenges, barriers to work and work needs.
2. Plan to address additional support needs of staff members / 2.1 Establish goals and expectations for provision of additional support with individual staff member.

3.3 Advise other staff involved in provision of additional support about the strategies and supports that have been implemented to assist the individual staff member.
3.4 Review and seek feedback on implementation of strategies and supports in accordance with organisational requirements.
3.5 Make changes to strategies and supports as needed in line with identified improvements.

Performance Evidence

Before competency can be determined, individuals must demonstrate they can perform the following according to the standards defined in this unit’s elements and performance criteria:

  • Recognise and document barriers to work and additional support needs of individual staff members, in consultation with the individual.
  • Identify strategies, supports and/or resources that can be implemented to address additional support needs, and seek agreement of individual staff members with support needs on implementation.
  • Implement workplace arrangements to fulfil provision of agreed additional support.
  • Monitor effectiveness of supports and strategies and make any improvements to ensure staff member additional support needs are met.
  • Collaborate and consult with individual staff members in need of support to perform all of the above.

Knowledge Evidence

The candidate must be able to demonstrate knowledge to effectively complete the tasks outlined in the elements and performance criteria of this unit. This includes knowledge of:

  • Organisational policies and procedures related to diversity and implementing modifications or supports for staff members.
  • Resources, support services, equipment and facilities that can be accessed to meet staff member support needs.
  • Assistive technologies and aids that can be implemented to meet support needs.
  • Augmentative and alternative communication methods and devices that can be utilised to address staff member communicative needs and preferences.
  • Reasonable adjustments, workplace modifications and flexible work strategies that can be implemented to meet individual needs of staff members.
  • Specialist support providers that can be referred to as needed to address more complex support needs of staff members.

Assessment Conditions

Assessment must be conducted in a safe environment where evidence gathered demonstrates consistent performance of typical activities experienced in the context of the relevant sector’s work environment. Competency should be demonstrated in a range of actual or simulated work contexts, and include access to:

  • Legislation, regulations and codes of practice that address diversity in the workplace and provision of modifications or additional support.
  • Workplace diversity and support policies and procedures.
  • Interaction with others.
