HISTORY

In February 2011 the Practice decided to set up a Patient Reference Group. The first Meeting was held on Wednesday 18th May 2011 in the evening. Seven patients attended the first meeting and were recruited to the Group.

Terms of Reference and a Code of Conduct were drawn up and a Chair and Secretary were appointed. Initially the meetings were held on a monthly basis and were attended by all GPs, Practice Manager, Practice IT Lead and a member of the Reception Team. As the Group developed it was decided from August 2011 to hold 6 weekly meetings (with a view to moving to bi-monthly meetings). Currently the meetings are held bimonthly, are attended by the above Practice staff, one GP from the Practice (in rotation) and the patient representatives.

2013 has seen 5 active members of the patient reference group continue to attend bi-monthly meetings. The practice has received many expressions of interest but unfortunately those interested have failed to attend any of the meetings.

Following the meeting in January 2014, the practice has made a decision to take a more proactive approach in endeavoring to engage with patients. When patients complete the expression of interest form, the chair of the PRG will telephone the patient to introduce himself and to explain the aims and objectives of the group to ascertain if the patient remains interested in being a member. 12 new members have been invited to attend the meeting scheduled for March 2014.

The Involvement of the Patient Reference Group during 2013 - 14

Annual Patient Survey

The questions for the Annual Patient Survey were initially discussedvirtually via email, with further discussion at the November 2013 meeting and then the final questions were agreed and signed off at the January 2014 meeting.

There were 15 questions and one of the Group members produced the questions in a tabular format fitting on to both sides of 1 sheet of A4. The survey questions were handed out over a period of about 3 weeks during January 2014. The surveys were distributed via email, post and over the counter at the reception.

The patient survey results were then collated by one of the Patient Reference Group members and presented to the practice for analysis. The practice manager then presented the results of the survey to the patient reference group, and discussion of the conclusions and recommendations took place and an action plan to implement improvement was agreed.

Following this meeting the survey results were discussed with the GPs after which a patient feedback report was produced which would be included on our Practice website.

CCG Patient Cabinet

In July 2012 one of our Patient Reference Group Members was successful in his application for membership on the CCG Patient Cabinet. There are 12 places on the Patient Cabinet, 2 patients representing each of the 6 Townships of Bury. One member of the Patient Cabinet has a place on the Clinical Group Board which means that for the first time patients have real voices in making decisions about future services and patient care in their locality. Our member continues to participate in this group throughout 2013 – present date.

PATIENT REFERENCE GROUP ACHIEVEMENTS 2012/13:

Production of the practice Newsletter with topics such as: Extended hours, where to go when you are feeling unwell, and sensible use of alcohol.

Assisting the Practice with the GP Patient Survey, particularly in presentation of the Questions, correlation of the results and identifying any further actions.

The recruitment of new PRG Membership

A continued willingness to assist the Practice in any area where there are concerns and to assist in identifying and initiating ways in which the Practice can progress in the modern NHS.

Raising the profile of Patient Involvement – featured in an article in the Bury Times.
