I am actively involved in psychiatric private practice. I currently supervise the treatment of patients with a wide range of psychiatric conditions together with providing a specialist service for the treatment of depressive disorders and alcohol related problems. I assess and treat stress related conditions including Post Traumatic Stress Disorder resulting from accidents and also medical negligence and conditions resulting from bullying and overload in the workplace including Post Traumatic Embitterment Disorder. I haveconsulting rooms at the Nuffield Hospital, Kingswood Road in Tunbridge Wells, Kentand at Willicombe House, Tunbridge Wells, Kent.

I have recent experience of treating patients with a combination of physical and psychological problems following trauma, both on an inpatient and outpatient basis in conjunction with a skilled team of therapists including specialist physiotherapists.

I worked with a major insurance company to develop a screening questionnaire for Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder symptoms in accident victims which has subsequently been employed by a number of solicitors.

I have extensive experience of writing medico-legal reports, receiving approximately 100 new instructions this year covering personal injury, family issues, forensic assessments and the psychological consequences of medical and surgical negligence. I have considerable experience of giving evidence in Magistrates’, County Courts and the High Court and recently, a number of Employment Tribunals. I have been complimented by several judgeson the clarity of the evidence I have given and on my ability to withstand vigorous cross-examination.

I am fully registered with the General Medical Council No: 1298864 on the specialist register as a General Adult Psychiatrist, and I am in good standing with the Royal College of Psychiatrists for Continuing Professional Development. I am recognised as having special experience in the diagnosis or treatment of mental disorder and I am approved under Section 12 (2) of the Mental Health Act 1983. I am a member of the Independent Doctor’s Forum.

I am a regular member of a Peer Group, which addresses professional issues and carries out audits of adverse events, in order that I am in good standing for CPD with RCPsych.

I was admitted as an individual member of the Expert Witness Institute on 1st December 2008. I became an Accredited Mediator in September 2011. I was elected as a Fellow of the Royal College of Psychiatrists in February 2014.

SKILLS

  • Assessment of adult psychiatric patients with a wide range of conditions including anxiety states, depression, schizophrenia, alcohol abuse and personality disorders.
  • Assessment of victims of road traffic accidents including the diagnosis of phobic states and post-traumatic stress disorder.
  • Assessment of clients who have experienced stress in the context of employment in connection with claims for psychological harm as a result of overload, poor management, bullying and/or harassment at work.
  • Assessment of patients whose abuse of alcohol has led to the development of physical dependence together with social or interpersonal problems.
  • Assessment of clients in the context of medical negligence claims; both the relationship between psychological harm and medical and surgical negligence, and also medical negligence specifically in the field of psychiatric treatment.
  • I am an accredited Mediator.

After qualifying as a medical practitioner, I commenced my post-graduate education in Psychiatry at Charing CrossHospital and subsequently held posts at BexleyHospital and Guy’s Hospital in London. I attended training at the Institute of Psychiatry, passing the DPM, and was granted Foundation Membership of the Royal College of Psychiatrists before my appointment as a Consultant Psychiatrist in Sussex in March 1971.

CONSULTANT PSYCHIATRIST, HELLINGLYHOSPITAL, EAST SUSSEX

1971 – 1986

I was a Consultant Psychiatrist in Adult Psychiatry with responsibility for the Hastings and Bexhill catchment area, looking after a wide range of psychiatric patients. I had a special interest in forensic psychiatry. During my employment at HellinglyHospital I assessed and reported on a number of patients who had been involved in criminal activities ranging from minor offences to the perpetrators of serious crimes, including manslaughter and murder. I visited Lewes Prison and other prisons in the southern part of England, and also assessed patients at the special hospitals, Broadmoor and Rampton, prior to their transfer to HellinglyHospital for rehabilitation. I played an active part in the planning of a forensic psychiatry service at HellinglyHospital and on two occasions after my retirement in 1986 I acted as Locum Consultant Psychiatrist in the Ashen Hill Forensic Unit at HellinglyHospital.

During my training I ran the Alcohol Treatment Service at Bexley Hospital and subsequently I established the Community Alcohol Team in Hastings.I have a continuing interest in the assessment and treatment of patients with alcohol related problems.

I have taught medical students, nurses, general practitioners both as a Senior Registrarat Guy’s Hospital and as Clinical Tutor at HellinglyHospital. I have appeared on radio and television. I lectured to a group of solicitors who are members of the Association of Personal Injury Lawyers on Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder.
