EGD (ESOPHAGOGASTRODUODENOSCOPY) or Upper Endoscopy
INSTRUCTIONS AND PREPARATION
Your doctor has ordered an EGD or upper endoscopy which is an examination of your esophagus, stomach, and the first part of your small intestine called the duodenum using a flexible tube called an endoscope. Below, you will find important information to help you prepare for your EGD.
- Please do not have anything to eat or drink after midnight the evening before the test, as the examination requires an empty stomach.
- You may take blood pressure/heart medications upon waking the morning of the test with a small amount of water.
- If you are a diabetic on insulin, take 2/3 of your morning dose of insulin.
- If you have an artificial heart valve or if you have been told by previous physicians to take antibiotics prior to dental and/or surgical procedures, please contact our office. You may need to receive antibiotics IV prior to the procedure. We will need to know of any drug allergies at that time also.
- You will be unable to drive the day of the test because of the sedation you will receive before the procedure, as it may temporarily impair your judgement. Bring a driver with you to the facility or make sure one is available to call after the test. You should not return to work and we recommend you not stay alone after the exam.
- After arriving at the hospital or endoscopy center, check in at the registration desk. They will inform the GI Lab you have arrived. You may have blood drawn also. Since sedation will be used to help with any discomfort you may have, an IV or saline lock will be placed in your hand or arm.
- You will need to sign a consent form authorizing the doctor to perform the EGD.
- You will need to change into hospital attire and will be taken to the room where the EGD will be performed unless you have to wait. The procedure takes less than 15 minutes, and recovery for one hour. Before you leave the GI Lab, you and/or your family member will receive information about the result of the EGD as well as instructions regarding activity, diet, IV site care and follow-up.

We will receive any pathology results within a couple of days. You will receive a letter regarding you’re your results. A copy of your EGD endoscopy report and any associated pathology will be forwarded to your referring or primary care physician.
