Professional biography
Professor Jan Tack graduated summa cum laude in 1987 from the University of Leuven and specialized in internal medicine and gastroenterology at the same institution. A research fellow at the Department of Physiology at the Ohio State University, Columbus, Ohio, USA, from 1989 to 1990, he has been a research fellow at the Center for Gastroenterological Research at the University of Leuven since 1990. He is currently a Head of Clinic in the Department of Gastroenterology, a Professor in Internal Medicine and head of the Department of Internal Medicine at the University of Leuven, Leuven, Belgium, and a principal researcher in the Center for Gastroenterological Research at the University of Leuven.
Research interests
Professor Tack’s research lies in the field of neurogastroenterology and motility, and includes diverse topics such as the physiology and pharmacology of the enteric nervous system, GI hormones, intestinal inflammation and the pathophysiology of FD, GERD and IBS. He has published more than 200 articles and 35 book chapters on various aspects of scientific and clinical gastroenterology.
Awards
Professor Tack was the recipientof several awards for Basic and Clinical Research in GI Science, including a research Prize of the Flemish Association for Gastroenterology (1993), the Belgian G. Brohee Prize for Gastrointestinal Research (1994), the International Janssen Award for Basic and Clinical Research in Gastrointestinal Science (presented at Digestive Disease Week of the American Gastroenterology Association 1999), the Belgian Baron Simonart prize for Clinical Pharmacology (1999), a research award of the Belgian Royal Academy of Medicine (1999), the Belgian Biotherabel-AstraZeneca prize for Gastrointestinal Research (2000), the Belgian Paternoster & Vantrappen prize for Neurogastroenterology (2000), and the International Janssen Award for Neurogastroenterology and Motility (presented at the International Motility Meeting in 2005).
Boards and committees
Professor Tack has served as associate editor for Gut and is board member of the European Association for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy, and of the European Society for Esophageal Diseases. He was Chairman of the Rome III Gastroduodenal Committee and member of the Rome III Pharmacologyand the Rome III Slide Committee.
