Date: February 3, 2010 Member Attendance: 23

Birthdays: None Anniversaries: None

Guests: - Byron Tabor (pseudoguest); Leah Schmidt, President Elect of HICREW

Announcements Byron and Leah pitched the upcoming Pancake Breakfast, fundraiser for HICREW on Saturday, Feb. 13. See the poster elsewhere on our web site. Joe Schmall says to keep those cards and letters coming in with requests for tickets and checks for the money – this for our pancake breakfast on March 20. Don Grimm needs help – required reporting of activities need to go to Kiwanis International, so Don needs to know participants and hours for all. Joe Blanck held a community service meeting after lunch today – he surely will report on that next week. President Dan Breitbach talked about the Board Meeting yesterday, especially about a plan to mob up and visit Sr. Charmaine in Dubuque soon.

Happy Bucks John Anderson told a lame joke, claiming it to be up to Ron Sunderman standards. Said Mr. Sunderman, “no way”, and paid a buck to double down on the judgment. Pam Landon says her son is surviving in New Jersey, and had a second greenback to celebrate eldest son’s 30th birthday. Chuck Wehage is happily driving his 25 year old Pontiac, and NOT a Toyota. Don Grimm told of his mother’s oncologist’s opinion that she need not worry about her cancer since, given her age, nothing in her body will grow. Guest Leah Schmidt was happy that the Hiawatha Kiwanis Club does not sing at meetings (we really butchered “When The Saints Go Marching In”). Mike Poggenklass was happy to announce that he is now the Choir Director for the Hiawatha Kiwanis Club. Our speaker, Billy Chadima, threw in a buck as an appreciation of the good attendance (I think). Steve Walrath had a buck honoring his son who hosts a radio program at UNI, and another to tell another lame joke. Ron Sunderman again donated to cast aspersions on the quality of said groaner.

Upcoming Programs: Dr. David Hammes, Podiatrist, Feb. 17

Word for the Day: Mulflon – a wild sheep (looked up quickly by Sunderman, who has finally figured out how to use his new phone). A second Word, Irenic, was offered, meaning passive or nonpolemic

Program Overview: Billy Chadima of Hawkeye Fire & Safety Company, showed a film describing the effectiveness of portable fire extinguishers, even in a sprinkler-equipped building. He recommends at least a five pound ABC dry chemical unit for every home. Some study and training is needed to use the devices, but when done right, it saves lives and property.
