Download Oracle 10g client to a Windows Vista machine

1.)Go to

2.)Save it locally on your pc. This is a 588MB file and will take some time to download. Please remember where you have saved it.

3.)After the download has been completed. You will have to expand this .zip file. If you do not have a program to expand .zip files, go to and install Aladdin Expander.

4.)The 10203_client_vista.zip will expand into a “client” folder. In this folder, you will find a 10g Setup icon. Click on it to start the Oracle Universal Installer. Wait several minutes, if the Oracle Installer does not start and bring up a GUI interface, you will have to go to Start, Run, and navigate to the directory where this client has been expanded, and type setup.exe at the command prompt. If you do multiple installations the folders will be names client_1, client_2, etc. This client will not work if you have multiple installed versions on your machine. You will need to uninstall and delete the directory c:\oracle before trying to re-install.

5.)Follow the instructions in the Oracle Universal Installer. Choose the Administrator Option. This client will create a C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1 folder. After you have installed the client, but you are still in the Universal Installer, you will see a Net Configuration page. On that page there will be a box that says Perform a typical configuration. After the Oracle Installer has completed, go to C:\oracle\product\10.2.0\client_1\network\ADMIN\. Either create a tnsnames.ora file, and add the following:

AOS.BUFFALO.EDU =

(DESCRIPTION =

(ADDRESS_LIST =

(ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = aos.acsu.buffalo.edu)(PORT = 1521))

)

(CONNECT_DATA =

(SERVICE_NAME = aos.buffalo.edu)

)

Or drop in the tnsnames.ora file that has been provided for you. If you cannot drop or edit the tnsnames.ora file, you may need to change the permissions on this directory. Vista has some issues with giving the correct permissions, so for you user name give yourself full control on the directory.

6.)Before you can Link tables or can Import into Microsoft Access, you need to set up the ODBC on your machine. You must know your Oracle Username and Oracle password.

  1. To do this: Go to Start, Control Panel, Administrative Tools, Data Sources (ODBC).
  2. Select System DNS tab. Choose Add
  3. Select a driver - Scroll down and select Oracle in OraClient10_. Click Finish Button.
  4. Oracle ODBC Driver Configuration tab will appear.
  5. Data Source Name - can be anything.
  6. TNS Service Name - must be aos.buffalo.edu.
  7. User ID - Oracle user name(ubitname).
  8. Click the Test Configuration button, type in your Oracle password. If you cannot connect here you won’t be able to link or import tables. Remove your entry and start again.

7.)If you have any question regarding the setup of the Oracle 10203 client, please email .

8.)Only one Oracle client can be installed on your machine. If you have multiple installs on this machine, use the Oracle Universal Installer to delete all copies and only install the Administrator version.
