Dot and Jabber and the Great Acorn Mystery

Dear Families,

This week students will read Dot and Jabber and the Great Acorn Mystery. This story is informational fiction. Dot and Jabber are talking squirrels that discover how acorns are distributed and become oak trees. This week students will read words with the letters oo sounding as in book and moon. Students will read and spell words with the inflected endings -ed and ing added to words ending with silent e. Students will read and punctuate commanding and exclamatory sentences. In reading students will practice comparing and contrasting, as well as reading with unique voices for each character.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Donaghy

Skill: The letters oo are a vowel team that can stand for two different sounds: oo as in book and oo as in moon. These are called the short and long sounds of oo.

Skill: When a base word ends in silent e and a vowel suffix is added, drop the silent e and add the vowel suffix. Example: bake + -ed= baked.

book books brook cook crook crooks

foot good hood hoof hook look

nook shook stood took wood Woody

moon fool spool goof roof noon

spoon pool root food raccoon soon

Hint: Cover up the -ed or -ing. Add back the silent e to read the base word.

arrived baking blamed chasing chimed choked

closing danced dined glided hiding hiking

hoped joking liked living loved named

placing poked raced riding rising ruled

saved shaking skated sliced smiled solved
