Donald G. Bowman National Tax Moot – Notice for Try Outs

Thanks to the generous support of the Edmonton Tax Group of Fraser Milner Casgrain, the Faculty of Law is delighted to once again participate in the Donald G. Bowman National Tax Moot. As the title suggests, this moot addresses current issues in taxation and is well attended by law students across the country.

Last year, our team made it to the semi-finals as well as received the prize for Best Appellant Factum.

The problem is scheduled to be released on Monday, November 5, 2012. The Appellant’s factum is due electronically on Monday, January 28, 2013 and the Respondent’s factum is due on Monday, February 11, 2013. This year’s moot will be held in Toronto on March 1-2, 2013.

Team members should be prepared to devote a modest amount of time after the problem is released in November to discuss the problem and conduct some initial research. However, in December, students are not expected to spend any time on the moot problem until after the Christmas break. Much time will be required in January for research and factum preparation and in February for oral practice rounds. Students on the team should plan to be available for practice rounds throughout Reading Week.

Given the subject matter of the moot, students interested in participating should at least be registered in Taxation in this fall term. Students who have taken Taxation and other advanced taxation courses will be preferred. Taxation courses from other faculties or programs as well as other tax experience will also be considered.

If you are interested in trying out for the team, then please send me an email at indicating such interest along with a current copy of your transcript and resume by 5 pm on Wednesday, September 12, 2012. Students expressing their interest will also be required to attend a short oral try-out in the Moot Court Room on Friday, September 14, which will commence at 3 pm.

The purpose of this oral try-out is to give students the opportunity to demonstrate their oral advocacy skills. Students will be required to speak for a maximum of 5 minutes inclusive of questions on a topic that will not require any legal research. This topic will be provided by email to the students seeking a spot on the team on Thursday morning, September 13.

Good luck to all!
