“Don’t Mess With The Gospel”

Galatians 1:6-10

Introduction

What is something that gets under your skin?

Background of the Scripture

Paul most likely wrote the letter to the Galatians within 2 years of his first missionary journey to that area. Typically in Paul’s letters he moves from his opening to a statement of thanksgiving. Not so in his letter to the Galatians. Here, Paul immediately launches in with a rebuke. Evidently there was nothing to commend them for. The rebuke was so important because they were turning to a dangerous different gospel.

Think Through the Scripture

  1. What is Paul astonished by? Paul noticed/heard this was happening in Galatia, what does that say about Paul?
  2. What does it say about the Galatians that they would so quickly desert Jesus?
  3. How does Paul say the Galatians were first brought to God? In what ways does this underscore their desertion?
  4. What does Paul say about the possibility of another gospel? What does that mean about the true gospel?
  5. Gospel is a key word in this book. What is the gospel?
  6. Who is the first person or group of people Paul says should be condemned to hell for preaching a different gospel? How does this demonstrate the importance of preaching the true gospel?
  7. What other groups does Paul add to list of those who should be condemned to hell for preaching a different gospel?
  8. What caused Paul to believe that preaching a different gospel is so dangerous? What does this say about Paul’s commitment to the true gospel?
  9. Paul pits approval from man against approval from God. What is so dangerous about people pleasing?
  10. How can being a people pleaser lead to a different gospel?
  11. How can we gain approval from and please God?
  12. If you were to write a headline for this section what would it say?
  13. What does this section say about God and man?

Apply the Scripture

  1. Is there anyone close to you who deserted the faith? What does that person need to hear?
  2. Are there any other “gospels” being preached in our culture?
  3. What helped you move from being someone who loved the gospel to someone who proclaims the gospel to people? If you aren’t there yet what is holding you back?
  4. How can we love people well and at the same time not be a people pleaser?

For Next Week

  1. Read Galatians 1:11-24
  2. Watch or listen to next week’s sermon.
  3. Apply what we talked about and come prepared to share what impact last week’s study made on your life.
  4. Remember Oct. 2nd is the Love Our City Event.

Key Takeaways

  1. Any gospel other than Jesus died for our sins and rose again is no gospel at all.
  2. The danger of a false gospel cannot be minimized because it leads people straight to hell.
  3. Our only desire should be to please God as a slave of Christ.
