Frequently Asked Questions About the Dutch Doggie Parade

1. How do I make my dog into a “Dutch doggie”?

Our sponsor, Faux Paws Bakery has dog Dutch costumes to purchase.

Some dogs may be able to fit into real kids’ Dutch costumes.

2. Do I have to wear a costume if I am walking my dog?

Yes! Visitors come to Pella to see its participants in costume.

3. How much is it to participate?

It is free to register, however there is no day of registration, and the deadline to register is Monday, April 30, to Faux Paws Bakery.

4. Can I have more than one dog in the parade?

One dog per walker. If you have more than one dog, you will need to register them separately and have an adult walker for each one.

5. How many people can walk per dog?

Each dog must have one walker 18 or over walking with them. The walker may have one guest walk with them.

6. What is required of the dog to participate in the parade?

We ask for well-behaved dogs only and that they be leashed the entire parade route. Dogs should be able to walk or be carried or in a stroller from parade start to finish. All dogs must have proof of their rabies vaccination.

7. What is required of the walker during the parade?

The walker must be at least 18 years old. All walkers are responsible to bag their dog’s poop.

8. What days will the Dutch Doggie Parade take place?

The Dutch Doggie Parade will take place Thursday and Saturday afternoons.

9. Where do I go on parade day?

Line up in front of the Hospice House on Union Street at 3 p.m.

10. Do you have any safety tips for my dog?

1.Plan for “down time.” On parade day, you will line up by 3 p.m. and will probably not begin walking for quite a while. You might want to bring a toy or other distraction for your pooch!

2.Take water. The weather in Iowa in May could be hot, cold, rainy, etc. If it’s warm, you should plan to bring water for yourself and your dog. Some dogs enjoy a spray bottle for “spritzing.”

3.Protect the feet. Beware of potentially hot pavement and take precautions. Also, with a long parade route, make sure that you wear comfortable foot gear as well.

4.Dress properly. Wearing layers will allow you to be prepared for any weather conditions that may arise. Remember, rain could mean slippery roads and a slippery leash so gloves could be a good idea.

5.Beware other dogs and parade animals. If your dog does not behave well around other animals, and large crowds, this might not be the experience for you.
