Superintendent Endorsement Internship

Doctor of Education Program in Educational Leadership

Objective: The Ed.D. internship in Educational Leadership provides interns with the ability to apply theoretical and empirical knowledge to solve practical administrative problems. Working with a cooperating superintendent (or other district administrator with a superintendent endorsement), the intern will assume district-level leadership work. The work will assist interns as they seek to fill in professional gaps in their leadership careers, and it will allow them opportunities to practice and demonstrate system-level leadership. A minimum of 800 hours of work is required over approximately two to three years.

Content: The intern’s responsibilities will be defined collaboratively by the cooperating superintendent and the advising professor. In co-constructing internship work, the cooperating superintendent and intern will examine one to three significant district-wide projects that could be completed by the intern over a one to three year time period. The intern ideally would have the opportunity to take full responsibility for the project(s). The project(s) should not be school-based; instead, the project(s) should involve multiple schools in the district or all schools in the district. It is assumed that work on the project(s) will involve considerable time above and beyond regular work duties.

Interns should advocate for project(s) that will (1) assist them in building their resumes, (2) provide them opportunities to fill in professional gaps, (3) demonstrate systemic leadership, and

(4) require application of best leadership practices and genuine leadership. The project(s) must allow the intern to be able to demonstrate significant work in the following eight areas.

(NOTE: traditionally, interns divide their 800 hours evenly into each of the eight areas)

Planning: Developing goals, preparing forecasts and projects, conducting needs assessments, studying demographics, looking at long-range forecasting for a school or district.

Policy Development: Participating in policy development or ad hoc committees and developing procedures for new initiatives.

Resource Allocation: Data-driven decision-making, priority development, proposal design and analysis, budget preparation and analysis, collective bargaining, briefings to parents, board members or the community about why decisions are desirable or not.

Program Evaluation: Performance appraisals, supervision of teaching, coaching of other teachers, curriculum assessments, analysis of test data, and auditing the curriculum all fit in this category.

Community Relations: Facilitating advisory boards, representing the district in various capacities, working toward referenda goals, serving on governmental committees, engaging local communities in initiatives.

Staff Relations: Overseeing personnel policy, conducting climate studies, working on internal communications.

Governance Relations: Board meeting presentations, management of board members and special interest groups, handling controversial issues.

Action Research: Evaluation, data-driven decision-making, use of research in programming.

Evaluation: The intern is evaluated by the cooperating superintendent (or designee), as well as the advising professor, on the standards put forth by the Education Leadership Constituents Council (ELCC), the National Educational Technology Standards and Performance Indicators for Administrators (NETS*A), and/or the National College of Education (NCE) Conceptual Framework. A copy of these standards is attached below.

While the actual activities in the internship must address the eight areas above, the intern is also evaluated on the extent to which the ELCC and NETS*A standards and NCE conceptual framework are evidenced in his/her leadership.

Roles and Responsibilities: Interns, Cooperating Superintendent, and Advising Professor

What does the
intern do? / BEFORE THE INTERNSHIP BEGINS
1. Use LiveText to create your Superintendent Portfolio based on the template called EDL Doctoral Program Portfolio Template v. 2012. Go to Internship: Initial Review. Watch Video: http://youtu.be/KKESbJb-52o or See attached Directions below. In your portfolio, you must attach a two-three page narrative based on the guidelines provided to the “Initial Review: Eight Internship Areas Narrative.” Then submit your portfolio to the Internship: Initial Review LiveText Course Assignment.
2. Arrange initial review meeting with your cooperating superintendent and advising professor.
3. After the initial review meeting, go to www.nl.edu/edltools to complete the School District Profile Survey. Print out your responses on the survey. Then go to LiveText and click on the title of your portfolio located under the “Documents” tab. Go to Internship: Initial Review page of the portfolio template. You must attach a copy of your survey responses to the School District Profile Survey section.
HALF-WAY THROUGH THE INTERNSHIP
4. Immediately following the seventh term in the program, go to LiveText and click on the title of your portfolio located under the “Documents” tab. Go to Internship: Mid-Point Review page of the portfolio template. Complete and attach the required documents for the mid-point review. The mid-point review consists of a time log for each relevant area (out of eight) and a two-four page reflective narrative for each relevant area (out of eight). Then submit your portfolio to the Internship: Mid-Point Review LiveText Course Assignment.
NOTE: Your School District Profile Survey responses from Step 3 should be attached as well.
5. During the eighth term, the intern schedules a mid-point review meeting with the cooperating superintendent and advising professor.
6. Before the mid-point review conference, interns should remind their cooperating superintendent to complete a mid-point evaluation using the EDL Doctoral Program Competency Appraisal located at www.nl.edu/edltools. The intern also follows up with the superintendent to ensure that it is completed. The cooperating superintendent should email you a confirmation that the mid-point appraisal has been completed.
7. Interns should then FORWARD the email from the cooperating superintendent to the advising professor as confirmation that the appraisal was completed by the cooperating superintendent.
TOWARDS THE END OF THE INTERNSHIP
8. By the end of the 12th term, go to LiveText and click on the title of your portfolio located under the “Documents” tab. Go to Internship: Final Review page of the portfolio template. Complete and attach the required documents for the final review. Building upon the documents from the mid-point review, the documents for the final review contain the completed time logs for ALL eight areas and a two-four page reflective narrative for ALL eight areas. Then submit your portfolio to the Internship: Final Review LiveText Course Assignment.
NOTE: The 800 hour internship should be complete at this point.
9. At the conclusion of the internship, the intern arranges a final review conference with the cooperating superintendent and advising professor.
10. Before the final review conference, interns should remind their cooperating superintendent to complete a final evaluation using the EDL Doctoral Program Competency Appraisal located at www.nl.edu/edltools. The intern also follows up with the superintendent to ensure that it is completed. The cooperating superintendent should email you a confirmation that the final appraisal has been completed.
11. Interns should then FORWARD the email from the cooperating superintendent to the advising professor as confirmation that the final appraisal was completed by the cooperating superintendent.
12. After the conference, the advising professor will send the departmental administrative assistant the sign-off sheet signed by the superintendent and faculty advisor. The administrative assistant will then send the intern the application for the superintendent’s endorsement.
What does the
cooperating
superintendent
(or designee) do? / 1. Meet with the intern and advising professor at the beginning of the program to review internship requirements and to begin discussing potential internship projects.

2. Complete a mid-point evaluation using the EDL Doctoral Program Competency Appraisal located at www.nl.edu/edltools. The evaluation should take no more than five minutes to complete.
3. AFTER you click on Submit Form on the mid-point evaluation, please click on CREATE A PRINTABLE VERSION (located at top on the right) to print a copy of your completed mid-point evaluation. Please save the copy of your completed mid-point evaluation for the mid-point meeting/review with the intern and advising professor.
4. Then send an email to the intern confirming that the mid-point appraisal has been completed. This should be done as soon as you complete the mid-point appraisal.
5. Meet with the intern and advising professor at the mid-point of the internship to review internship requirements, mid-point evaluation, and progression on internship projects.
6. Complete a final evaluation using the EDL Doctoral Program Competency Appraisal located at www.nl.edu/edltools. The evaluation should take no more than five minutes to complete.
7. AFTER you click on Submit Form on the final evaluation, please click on CREATE A PRINTABLE VERSION (located at top on the right) to print a copy of your completed final evaluation. Please save the copy of your completed final evaluation for the final meeting/review with the intern and advising professor.
8. Then send an email to the intern confirming that the final appraisal has been completed. This should be done as soon as you complete the final appraisal.
9. At the end of the internship, the intern and the advising professor will meet once again with the cooperating superintendent to discuss progress on the internship, final evaluation, as well as to sign off on the 800 hours internship requirement.
What does the
advising professor do? / BEFORE THE INTERNSHIP BEGINS
1. Explain internship process and requirements to interns.

2. Verify that the initial review narrative is completed and submitted to you in LiveText.
3. Log into your LiveText account and read the initial review narrative submitted in LiveText. Then complete the Initial Review Rubric in LiveText.
4. Meet with cooperating superintendent and intern to begin the internship.
5. Remind interns to complete the “School District Profile Survey” located at www.nl.edu/edltools.
HALF-WAY THROUGH THE INTERNSHIP
6. After the fourth term of the program, remind interns to make sure that their cooperating superintendent complete mid-point evaluation using the EDL Doctoral Program Competency Appraisal located at www.nl.edu/edltools. Make sure that interns FORWARD you the email from the cooperating superintendent confirming that the mid-point appraisal was completed by the cooperating superintendent.
7. Remind interns to complete and submit time logs and narrative documents for the mid-point review to you in LiveText.
8. Log into your LiveText account and read the mid-point review narratives, school district profile survey responses, and check the time logs in LiveText. Then complete the Mid-point Review Rubric in LiveText.
AT THE END OF THE INTERNSHIP
9. Remind interns to make sure that their cooperating superintendent completes a final evaluation using the EDL Doctoral Program Competency Appraisal located at www.nl.edu/edltools. Make sure that interns FORWARD you the email from the cooperating superintendent confirming that the final appraisal was completed by the cooperating superintendent.
10. Meet with the cooperating superintendent and the intern at the end of the internship so that official paperwork for the superintendent endorsement can be finalized.
11. Remind interns to complete and submit the time logs and narrative documents for the final review to you in LiveText.
12. Log into your LiveText account and read the final review narratives and check time logs in LiveText. Then complete the Final Review Rubric in LiveText.
