NQT Suggested CPD Tasks and Activities2015/2016

To get the most from your NQT year and develop fully as a qualified teacher you need to use your 10% NQTnon contacttime well.

Below are some suggested tasks and activities which are related to the Teacher standards. It is strongly advised that you work out a programme of these to support your individual needs and aspirations. They will help you to collect evidence that you are consistently meeting the T standards by the time you reach your final assessment.

This should be shared with your mentor and form part of your half termly meetings.

Standard / Tasks /Activities
  1. Set high expectations which inspire, motivate and challenge students
/
  • Lesson observations of other teachers, including lead teachers
  • Learning walks, to look at learning environments around school
  • Meet with SENCO/G&T coordinator, regarding recognising and delivering appropriate challenges for all pupils
  • Look at the School Development Plan and identify areas you are involved in

  1. Promote good progress and outcomes by students
/
  • Meet with Assessment/data coordinator
  • Analyse class/year group data
  • Look at high quality marking which sets high standards
  • Complete a mini book trawl across the school to look for progress in Maths and English

  1. Demonstrate good subject and curriculum knowledge
/
  • Lesson observations of subject leaders/department colleagues
  • Identify weaknesses/gaps in knowledge and carry out online research
  • Investigate training opportunities at other schools

  1. Plan and teach well-structured lessons
/
  • Lesson observations of other teachers, including subject leaders teaching their subject of expertise
  • Read /implement school policies (e.g. homework, marking, teaching and learning, etc)
  • Collaborative planning with subject leader/phase leader/year group colleagues
  • Discuss your lesson plan with a colleague
  • Peer observations, of other NQTs to give each other advice
  • Video yourself teaching, followed by self-analysis/analysis with induction tutor
  • Self-evaluation of own lessons
  • Visit another school within FWTSA with a specific focus.

  1. Adapt teaching to respond to the strengths and needs of all students
/
  • Meet with the SENCO , regarding specific children in the class
  • Observe Intervention programmes
  • Talk to relevant colleagues regarding strategies to use for EAL, MA, SEND pupils
  • Investigate teaching resources
  • Carry out online research on SEN, including dyslexia, dyscalculia, autism, ADHD, and other specific needs based on your class or year group needs.
  • Complete a lesson observation of an experienced colleague focusing on different ways of differentiating.
  • Ask to visit a school with a very different socio-economic catchment area

  1. Make accurate and productive use of assessment
/
  • Look at the new Assessment procedures within the school. How will data be tracked looking for progress?
  • Look at Assessment for learning – both formative and summative
  • Moderate work samples with colleagues
  • Review pupils’ previous attainment and review targets set
  • Investigate expectations for pupils in the age range above and below that which you teach
  • Observe lessons in the year group above and below, to see where they came from/expected to get to
  • Read/implement the school marking policy
  • Talk to the assessment coordinator to understand school expectations and deadlines

  1. Manage behaviour effectively to ensure a good and safe learning environment
/
  • Read/implement the schools’ behaviour policy
  • Lesson observation of others teaching your class
  • Lesson observation in another school with different/similar behaviour challenges
  • Meet with the behaviour coordinator
  • Research different behaviour strategies online

  1. Fulfil wider professional responsibilities
/
  • Consider any specialist skills you have that can enrich the life of the school (e.g. organising a lunchtime/afterschool club)
  • Support a colleague in delivering an after school/lunchtime club – research and prepare for this
  • Organise a school trip
  • Prepare for presentations in staff meetings
  • Shadow a meeting with outside agencies (where appropriate)
  • Be aware of all school policies
  • Keep a log of your own CPD and the impact it has had on your practice
