The Transformation

Hi. My name is Henry. You’re probably wondering why I look the way I look. Well for starters, I didn’t always look this way. I used to be a tall handsome prince.

One day long ago, I was riding through the thick, dark forest in search of a beautiful princess. I stopped at a babbling brook to cool down my horse and get a drink of water. A funny little man told me that he would have me marry Princess Aphordite, the most beautiful princess in all the land, if I completed two tasks. I gladly accepted his challenge.

Task one was to climb Mt. Ianih and get the golden egg from Eli the eagle. I climbed Mt. Ianih with the greatest of skill, stepping cautiously with each step. Eli swooped and dove chasing me down the cliff as I raced off with the golden egg.

I returned to the old man in the forest with the golden egg. I was given task two. This time I had to go to the witch’s cave and retrieve the magic potion of youth. So off I rode to the dark cave deep in the forest. I trudged through the swamp to get to the cave’s entrance. There I gazed upon the witch. I knew I must have a plan to outsmart her if I were to get the magic potion of youth. I threw rocks at the wall on the left to distract the witch as I raced over to the magic potion bottles. There were three. I was confused so I took all three. The witch cast lightning bolts at me as I ran with the magic potion bottles. Suddenly a bolt hit my elbow and two of the magic potion bottles flew high into the air and landed with a loud crash. I barely escaped with the last bottle of magic potion.

I returned to the forest. At first I couldn’t find the old man. I decided to drink a small sip and figured who would know because only I knew how full the potion was to begin with. The old man mysteriously appeared and I gave him the magic potion. I noticed the old man had the strangest look on his face. He asked, “What happened to you?”

“What do you mean?” I replied.

“You don’t look like the prince I met by the pond.”

I rushed to the pond to see my reflection. Boy was I surprised. I look so strange, but yet I seemed to have magical powers.

The old man said, “This will never do. You can’t marry the princess like this!” He disappeared into the forest.

I am left looking strange, although I take great pleasure in having special powers.
