Course Description

This course is a continuation to Elementary I. Its purpose is to introduce you to the experience of learning a foreign language.

Course Objective

Our objective is for you to achieve a basic level proficiency in the target language (in

writing, speaking, reading, and listening). At the end of the semester you will be

expected to be able to use the target language at a novice level to:

* Express daily routine *Compare people and things

*Talk about the past *Use of Preterite and Imperfect

* Show a mature attitude toward cultural differences

About SPN1121 Hybrid course

SPN 1121 Hybrid combines traditional face-to-face classroom instruction with online computer-based learning. In this course students will have two hours in classroom (face to face) and two hours of online instruction.

This course requires self-discipline and time commitment. Students are expected to dedicate substantial time to study outside the time spent online in completing activities. The level of proficiency you attain will depend on you as the student. If you feel you lack the self-discipline, motivation, and time it requires for you to be successful in this course, you may want to consider the classroom setting instead. Keep up with the pace of the course and ask for help as soon as you feel you need it.

Assignments

Most of your assignments will be done online, using the Internet to access your student activity manual

. You have to complete your assignments by the due date. Some assignments will be required to be typed double space using a 12 font. All students are responsible for obtaining assignments from a classmate, if absence should occur.

You can email me if you have any question regarding your homework or exchange your number with other students within your class. Late homework will not be accepted. You will also have assignments from your textbook.

Attendance

Regular attendance is necessary for successful completion of this course. Attendance is mandatory and will be taken on a daily basis. You will be withdrawn from the course after two absences (20% of the class meeting time) during the semester. Upon the 1st absence, you will be notified that a further absence will result in your withdrawal from the course. On the 2nd absence you will be withdrawn from the course by the instructor. You will be marked absent if: they do not answer when their name is called, or if their signature does not appear on the sign-in sheet for that day; if they miss more than 15 minutes of class by arriving late or leaving early. It is the attendance records of the instructor, not the recollections of the student, which will be consulted for proof of attendance/absences.

You are responsible for all material and announcements made during class whether you are present or not. It is your responsibility to contact a classmate regarding missed activities and assignments.

Exceptions will be determined on a case-by-case basis for extremely extenuating circumstances, such as, but not limited to, complications regarding pregnancy, lengthy hospitalization as a result of a major medical condition, or military service. Exceptions will require clear and precise documentation which should be provided in a timely fashion.

ALL CELLULAR PHONES MUST BE TURNED OFF DURING CLASS PERIOD. If a cell phone should ring during class a 10-point deduction per incident will occur.

Withdrawal deadline with a “W” grade : July 21, 2017

Tardiness

Being more than 15 minutes late to class will count as an absence. If you come into class

after roll has be taken, you will be considered late and it is your responsibility to have your

professor record your attendance in her roster.

Participation

Participation grade is separate from attendance. You have to be willing to participate with our work everyday. This is not a place to sleep or to do other classes homework.

Also, improper conduct like talking with peers, interrupting excessively, being disrespectful

to the instructor and other will affect yourgrade and you may be asked to leave the

classroom (see Student Code of conduct in your catalog). Attendance to class does not

guarantee an A on participation.

Extra Credit

Opportunities to receive extra credit points will be offered throughout the term. Each

opportunity will allow you to earn 10 points and no more than 3 projects will be accepted.

Academic Honesty

Each student is expected to be in complete compliance with the college policy on Academic

Honesty as set forth in the admissions catalog and the student handbook. Any instance of

cheating or plagiarism will result in a “F” for the course. Plagiarism is defined as “to take

ideas, writing, etc.., from another source and to pass them off as one’s own .” Plagiarism is a

serious academic offense that may result in withdrawal from a particular class, failure in a particular course or expulsion from the college.

Presentations.

Students will be required to do one memorized presentations in Spanish in front of the class.

This presentation will be 1-2 minutes long. Also, you have to submit a typed copy of your speech/ dialogue, etc. to the professor. Guidelines will be provided. Everyone should present on the schedule day, no excuses and no make-ups.

Partial Exams and Final Exams

Exams will be given at the start of the lecture meeting. Late arrivals will not have extra time to complete the exam. Students cannot leave the classroom once the examination begins. No exams will be handed out once the first student turns in their test.

Final Exam should be taken according to the final Exam Schedule. In order to pass the course the student must score 70% or higher on the final grade.

Students with Disabilities

Students with disabilities who qualify for academic accommodations must provide a notification from the Office for Students with Disabilities (OSD) and discuss specific needs with the instructor preferably during the first two weeks of class. The Office for Students with Disabilities determines accommodations based on appropriate documentation of disabilities. The East Campus Office is located in Building 5 Room 216.
