MAYMYO or PYIN OO LWIN
Pyin Oo Lwin is the only town in Myanmar which is built in a township originally established by the Forestry Commission. As a result, it has a parkland air, with many original trees. In addition the town authorities have planted many cherry, jacaranda, flame of the forest and other blooming trees throughout the town.
After leaving the hot and dusty plains around Mandalay, the visitor climbs up a 3000 feet escarpment, passing through many villages and forestry projects, and arriving at this pleasant and cool place. It is most refreshing, with clean air. It is a flower town all year round, where one can enjoy fresh fruit and vegetables all year round.
CLOCK TOWER
The 75 foot PurcellTower, built in 1935, contains a working clock made by Gillette & Johnson Co. in commemoration of the 25th anniversary of King George the Fifth. It was opened in a grand ceremony in September 1936. The four dials are 4.5 feet in diameter, and the Big Ben chimes can be heard throughout the town.
ADVENTURE TRIPS FOR YOU TO DO
Royal Teak Tree. This is an 8 hour trip into the Baw Forestry Reserve. Here is the world's third tallest teak tree (600 years old, 24.5 ft girth, 185' high). On the way you’ll cross 6 streams, visit some Shan villages, and hunt for indigenous wild orchids.
KANDAWGYINATIONALGARDENS
Colonel May, after whom the town was named, used Turkish prisoners during World War I to create the first botanical garden. The original design was enhanced by Rodway Swinhoe in the 1920s (his memorial is in All Saints’ Anglican Church). Today it has been transformed into a magnificent recreational and horticultural centre, with trees, lakes, lawns, flowers and birds in abundance. It’s open from 7am to 6pm daily.
