Demonstrate Performance of Spirometry

Objective: The student, using the supplies and equipment listed below, will

demonstrate how to assist the patient in the performance of spirometry testing.

Supplies:spirometer, disposable mouthpiece and tubing, nose clip, chart,forms and lab slips for documentation and testing

Affective Behaviors: Affective behaviors provide a professional approach to a skill that enhances the patient encounter. These behaviors may also display sensitivity to patient’s rights and enhance communication. Pay close attention to these skills which will be in bold, italicized font.

Skills Assessment Requirements

Read and familiarize yourself with the procedure; complete the minimum practice requirements. Document each MPR using proper charting technique. Complete each procedure within a reasonable amount of time, with a minimum of 85% accuracy.

1. / Wash your hands. Gather equipment and supplies.
2. / Greet and identify the patient,
introduce yourself and guide
the patient to the treatment
area.
3. / Record the patient’s history and main complaint. Explain the entire procedure. Ask the patient if he or she has any questions prior to beginning.
4.  / If the patient is chewing gum,
ask him or her to dispose of it
(to prevent choking during the
test). If a female patient is
wearing lipstick, ask her to
remove it to create a tight seal.
5. / Ask the patient to place the
mouthpiece in his or her
mouth and to close the lips
tightly around the mouthpiece
to make a goodseal.
6. / Place the nose clips on the
patient’s nose, sealing
the nostrils closed.
7. / Ask the patient to inhale as
deeply as he or she possibly can
and hold the breath for a short
time. Then tell the patient to
blow the air out into the
mouthpiece as hard and as fast
as possible—until he or she
cannot blow out any more air.
8. / Repeat this procedure two more
times, giving the patient a few
minutes to rest in between.
9. / The electronic equipment will
usually “select” the best of the
three breathing tests.
10. / Document patient compliance
with and tolerance of the testing
procedure. Sign the entry with
your name and credentials.
11. / Follow cleaning procedures to
prepare the equipment and the
area for the next patient.
12. / Wash your hands.
