LEARNING OUTCOMES

  1. Students will demonstrate the ability to think critically about literature (fiction) through writing and class discussion.
  2. Students will demonstrate the ability to write a well-organized five paragraph theme on a literary topic.
  3. Students will demonstrate the ability to write clear, coherent sentences with a minimum of errors.
  4. Students will demonstrate the ability to adopt the appropriate tone and voice for their audience.
  5. Students will become acquainted with literature from a variety of cultures.
  6. Students will become aware of writing as a process that includes pre-writing, writing, proofreading, and revision.

EVALUATION

90-100 = A, 80-89 = B, 70-79 = C, 60-69 = D, 0-59 = F

AHS students will receive a separate high school grade.

READING ASSIGNMENTS

Assignments will include at leastfive short stories from the custom literature text. Instructors may also choose to assign one or more readings in the essay genre. Most if not all of the topics for student writing will deal with those stories and essays assigned for class reading. Sections of Harbrace Handbook will be assigned as needed to help students master necessary writing skills.

ESSAYS

Students must present an electronic copy and a hard copy of each essay. The electronic copies must be submitted on-line through Blackboard. Essays will be run through Turn-It-In.Com to scan for plagiarism.Faculty members will not accept a writing assignment for grading without the printed page from Blackboard indicating that the student has submitted the writing assignment electronically.

ACADEMIC HONESTY IS ASSUMED

A student found guilty of scholastic dishonesty is subject to disciplinary action. Violations such as plagiarism, cheating on tests, and collusion are described in the ACC Student Handbook. Consequences are at the discretion of the instructor and range from receiving a 0 on the assignment to failing the course to expulsion from the College.Note: I usually assign a 0 for the course.

RECORDS

Students must return every graded assignment to the instructor. The graded work will be kept on file at ACC.

Camcorders or any other video recording devices are prohibited in the classroom. Audio recording may be allowed only with the permission of the instructor.

ATTENDANCE IS EXPECTED OF EVERY STUDENT

Attendance of every student is expected at every class meeting. When an absence is unavoidable, it is the student’s responsibility to inform the instructor of the reason for the absence. The instructor will then decide whether the student may make up any missed assignments. Students may be dropped after six hours of absence; however,it is the instructor’s option, not his or her responsibility, to drop the student from the class. Students wishing to drop the course should do so themselves after conferring with the instructor.

THE FINAL EXAM

The Final Exam may include questions on grammar or textbook readings, but it will include an essay which counts 20% of the final grade. The essay topic will be chosen by the instructor, and the essay will be graded in accordance to the standards set forth in the departmental grading sheet.

Late Papers

Papers may be accepted late at the very next class period, with a 20% penalty to the grade. Late papers will not be accepted after this turnoff date for any reason.

ENGL 1301 is a Core Curriculum course. Completion of this course helps students meet the Communication Core Component.
