Explanatory notes

1This unit standard may be assessed against on-job or off-job.

2This unit standard does not cover fitting drawers using manufactured runners. These skills and knowledge are covered in Unit 25556, Assemble and fit drawers to a cabinet using manufactured runners.

3Personal protective equipment, appropriate to job requirements, is to be selected and used in accordance with worksite policies and procedures and manufacturer’s instructions.

4Definitions

Manufacturer’s instructions are instructions provided by manufacturers of substances, equipment, and machinery used in furniture making. These instructions may include details on safe and correct handling, use and storage of substances and/or details on substance properties. Examples are labels on substance containers, product data sheets, and operator’s manuals.

Safety Data Sheets (SDS) are documents containing information on toxic substances used in the worksite. It is a requirement of the Environmental Risk Management Authority that all worksites using toxic substances have an SDS.

Worksite policies and procedures refer to documented policies and to documented or other directions provided to staff. These may include, but are not limited to, ways of managing health and safety, environmental considerations, quality, and production, and must conform to legislation. Examples include standard operating procedures, company health and safety plans, on-site briefings, and supervisor’s instructions.

Outcome 1

Prepare to assemble and fit traditional drawers to a cabinet using wooden runners.

Evidence requirements

1.1Job specifications are obtained and explained in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.

Rangetype of cabinet, number of drawers, size of drawers, drawer runner size.

1.2Equipment is selected in accordance with job specifications and confirmed as being in safe working order in accordance with manufacturer’s instructions.

1.3Drawer components are selected in accordance with job specifications.

1.4Adhesive is selected in accordance with job specifications.

1.5Safety considerations related to the use of selected adhesive are explained in accordance with SDS.

Outcome 2

Assemble and fit traditional drawers to a cabinet using wooden runners.

Evidence requirements

2.1Drawer components are checked for defects in accordance with job specifications.

Rangephysical defects, dimensional variations.

2.2Wooden drawer runners are attached to the carcase ends in accordance with job specifications.

2.3Drawer sides are fitted to draw runners and checked for clearance.

2.4Drawers are assembled in accordance with job specifications.

2.5Drawers are fitted to give an even, parallel clearance in accordance with job specifications.

2.6Drawer stops are fitted in accordance with job specifications.

2.7Machine and work area are made clean, clear, and safe in accordance with worksite policies and procedures.
