Kindergarten – Field Day Station Explanations
Station #1 and Station #6 - “Soggy Bottoms”– Students split into two even teams. A full bucket of water should be in front of each team. On the signal “go” the first student in each line should dunk the sponge into their bucket of water, run it down to the chair at the other end of the black top and sit on the sponge. Once that student sits on the sponge he/she should bring it back to the next person in their line. The goal of the game is to be the first team to empty their bucket at the starting line. Teams will have the most success if they completely squeeze the water out of the sponge with their bottoms. Once the game ends repeat.
Station # 2 - “Mop Head”– Students split into two even teams. A full bucket of water should be in front of each team. On the signal “go” the first student in each line should dunk the mop in the bucket and pass the mop head over the head to the next student behind them. When the last person in line gets the mop he/she should run to the front of the line and repeat. The game continues until every person makes it to the front of the line. It’s a race, but this game is designed to get the kids soaked. Once the game ends repeat.
Station # 3and Station #8 - “Partner Squirts” - The class should be split into pairs of two. One person should be equipped with one full squirt bottle and a blindfold. The second person should be the guide and will hold onto their partner’s shoulders. On the signal “go” partner two (the person that is not blindfolded) should guide his/her partner around the boundary area for this game getting him/her into a position where he/she can squirt another group. The partner doing the guiding should tell their partner when to squirt. The game continues until the person doing the squirting runs out of water. At this point partners switch, get a refill, and continue to play. (This game is a favorite for many kids. Blindfolds haven’t worked in the past. Either have the kids squirt their bottles withtheir eyes shut, or just have the kids alternate squirting one another. They must stay within their zone on the black top.)
Station # 4 and Station # 9 - “White Water Rafting” – 5 White water rafts will be set up for each class to use. Students at the front of each line should SIT on a scooter board and place their hands on their knees or in their laps. Going forward to backward, students move around their team cone on the other side of the black top and back to their group. Teachers will use the water hose to squirt water at students as they move around their team cone.
Station # 5 - “Jump Rope and Hula Hoops” – The kids just finished an exhausting station and they are fifteen minutes from jumping in another one. This station is designed to slow things down a bit. They may jump rope or hula hoop here. They’ve been asking all year if they can hula hoop around their arms. Sure, here’s their chance! Hmmm, can they hula hoop around their arm and switch to the other arm? They’ve never tried it. How many times can they switch in 30 seconds? Volunteers could get pretty creative at this station.
Station # 7 - “Flower Pot Relay” - Students will get into one of two lines. Each line should have a bucket of water and a flower pot. Approximately fifteen yards in front of each line there should be an empty bucket. On the signal “go” the first person in each line should dunk their flower pot into their bucket of water and carry it to the empty bucket (carry it over their head on a warm day, or carry it in front of them with their hands on a cool day). Once students get to the bucket fifteen yards ahead they should dump the water remaining in their pot into their bucket and return to their line. This student should hand the pot to the next student and go to the back of the line. The game will end when one team has filled the bucket across from them up to the black line. If time allows feel free to play the game again.
Station # 10 - “Dome Maze” – Have the children build small groups of 2 to 5 students. Each group should work together to build a dome using 6 hula hoops (they know how to do this already). Once the dome is built students should take turns entering and exiting the dome without having it crash to the ground. The goal is to enter and exit as many different ways as possible before having the dome fall.
