Part-time Legal Advocate - Non-ExemptLegal Advocacy Program (LAP)
This is a grant-funded position through September 2016
Casa Myrna is Greater Boston’s foremost provider of solutions to end domestic and dating violence. The agency maintains three residential programs in Boston for women and children made homeless by domestic violence, a comprehensive range of supportive services provided at the programs and at the main office, and SafeLink, the only statewide 24/7 toll-free domestic violence hotline in Massachusetts.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities
· Creates outreach strategies with grant partners in order to provide legal services to targeted communities.
· Establishes, productive working relationships with residential programs and community-based providers to identify individuals who are underserved and under-resourced in these communities. Providers include but are not limited to Dorchester Women’s Safety Network, local hospitals, health centers and churches.
· Performs telephone screenings using customized intake tool.
· Based on information gathered from these screenings, makes client referrals to attorneys affiliated with the grant project for legal services.
· Throughout the course of the grant evaluates the intake tool for usefulness and effectiveness.
· Demonstrates awareness of client’s needs and circumstances when delivering information that may be sensitive in nature.
· Collects client and project data on performance of the projects goals and submits data for reporting purposes using Casa Myrna’s database. Ensures the confidentiality and security of all project data.
· Maintains complete and current client files.
· Works as a team player with other project staff.
· Attends professional development trainings both within Casa Myrna and in the community.
· Other related duties as assigned by supervisor and agency.
Qualifications and Requirements
· Bachelors in Human Services, Social Work or Counseling, or three years experience in counseling or advocacy work, preferably in a residential program setting
· Familiarity with issues of domestic violence and its impact on families
· Familiarity with community agencies and resources
· Ability to advocate in a collaborative work style to culturally diverse populations
· Crisis intervention and problem solving skills
· Experienced in trauma-informed work with survivors of domestic or family violence
· Strong organizational skills
· Maintains professional boundaries at all times
· Maintains confidentiality regarding program participants
