COURSE SYLLABUS
Course Description:
Using project-based instruction, students are introduced to the principles of business in the 21st century while refreshing their keyboarding skills. This course should also help students to use computers effectively in their lives, thus providing a connection of computer science and business careers.
The goal of this course is to provide all middle school students with an introduction to the principles of computer science, basic keyboarding skills, Internet safety and usage, and computer applications. Students will explore how personality traits and personal values align with career choices and will develop a career plan. Personal, professional, and ethical standards of behavior for the workplace will be examined and reinforced in the classroom.

Internet Usage Policy
This is NOT an Internet course! The computers will be used to aide learning. If you are on the computer at an inappropriate time or on a website that is not directly related to the project, you will receive appropriate disciplinary action and your login ID could be disabled.
Grading Plan:
Grading will occur on a variety of assignments, including:
· Summative (Tests & Projects) 60%
· Formative (Daily Assignments & Quizzes) 40%
Classroom Format:
Assignments:
· Students absent during the majority of a group project will be given an alternate assignment.
· All homework assignments are due at the beginning of the class period on the day they are due. In class assignments are due during the class period.
· If the student is absent on the due date of an assignment, the assignment is due on the day of their return. If the student is absent on the day of a test/quiz, the student will be expected to take the test/quiz on the day of their return.
NO CLASSWORK OR HOMEWORK WILL BE ACCEPTED LATE!
It is strongly recommended that every student keep a planner or assignment book to record the dates all homework assignments, tests, and quizzes are due.
BE RESPONSIBLE. PLAN AHEAD.
CLASS RULES:
· BE ON TIME: You must be in your seat and be ready to work when the bell rings. Students are also expected to remain in their seats until the dismissal bell rings.
· SHOW RESPECT TO THE TEACHER, EACH OTHER, AND YOURSELF. In order to be addressed, the student must raise their hand to speak or to inquire about moving around the room. No student is allowed to play any computer games, on the Internet, or in any other computer application unless the teacher has given permission to do so.
· SHOW RESPECT TO THE EQUIPMENT. The student is responsible for the safe handling of the computer station they are assigned. No foreign disks or CD’s are allowed, no unplugging the ports or wires is allowed, and no reconfiguration of the software or hardware is allowed. No food or drink is allowed near the computer workstation. Destruction of the CPU, keyboard, mouse, wires, and/or data media will not be tolerated and will be considered a serious offense.
· MAINTAIN HIGH LEVELS OF INTEGRITY AND WORK ETHIC. Students are expected to follow the school policy on cheating; this includes unauthorized use of e-mail, copying others’ work, or doing it for them in or out of the classroom.
DISCIPLINE POLICY FOR RULE VIOLATION:
1st offense: Verbal warning.
2nd offense: Call or e-mail the parent/guardian.
3rd offense: Office referral. Parent will be contacted.

Academic Honesty:
Students are expected to achieve and maintain the highest standards of academic honesty and excellence. Not only does academic honesty preserve the integrity of both the student and the school, but it is also essential in gaining a true education. Students pledge that they will not lie, cheat, plagiarize, or steal in the pursuit of his or her studies and are encouraged to report those who do.
