QNAP NAS RAID data access using R-Studio

This guide includes the following scenario.

  1. Access RAID-5 data using R-Studio
  2. Access RAID-0 data using R-Studio
  3. Access Deleted RAID-5 data using R-Studio

Each guide also includes the procedures to create the RAID. If not interest, please go the step 3 for data access directly.

  1. Access RAID-5 data using R-Studio

NOTE: This guide includes the following 4 steps. If you just want to recover data, please start from step 3.

1. Create 3-disk RAID-5

2. Put DATA on the RAID

3. Connect all HDD to a PC by USB

4. Run R-studio to recovery the data.

1.0 Create 3-disk RAID 5:

1.1 Disk 2 1TB / Disk 4 1TB / Disk 6 500GB

2.0Put data on the RAID:

2.1We put one pic file (IMG_9328 / 1.9MB) at “Public” folder

3.0Connect all HDD to PC by USB

3.1 We unplug Disk2 & Disk4 from NAS.

3.2 Use SATA convert USB cable to connect PC

3.3 When you plug-in these 2 HDD to PC. PC can’t identify EXT4 file system / partition , So you can’t see them at your Windows file management

3.4 But R-Studio can identify them:

4.0Run R-Studio to recovery the data.

4.1 All QNAP NAS file store at 3rd partition:

4.2 choose “Create Virtual RAID”“Create Virtual Block RAID”

4.3 Right panel (Parents) will show, Use mouse right click at add these 3 HDDs in list:

4.4 Please let your HDDs order like this and choose “RAID 5”:

4.5 go to left panel (Drivers) and at you virtual RAID right click mouse, select“Recover All Files” : (If you only need some files you want. Please jump to 4.8)

4.6 Choose recover files save to where: (Here I choose more free space D:\)

4.7 When done. You can see recover files at d:\

4.8 if you choose “Open diver files”:

4.9 Waiting……..

4.10 Done!! You can see all files. (Some Red Cross mark file is dead. You can’t recover it!!) Others you can choose to recover…..

You can choose recover to where: (Single file or you marked!!)

  1. Access RAID-0 data using R-Studio

1. Create 3-disk RAID-0

2. Put DATA on the RAID

3. Connect all HDD to a PC by USB

4. Run R-studio to recovery the data.

1.0 Create 3-disk RAID 0: (WARNING!! ALL HDDs should the same size. Different will make data lost <R-Studio bug!?>)

1.1 Disk 2 1TB / Disk 4 1TB / Disk 6 1TB

2.0Put data on the RAID:

2.1We put one pic file (IMG_9328 / 1.9MB) at “Public” folder

3.0Connect all HDD to PC by USB

3.1 We unplug Disk2 & Disk4 from NAS.

4.2 choose “Create Virtual RAID”“Create Virtual Block RAID”

4.3 Right panel (Parents) will show, Use mouse right click at add these 3 HDDs in list:

4.4 Please let your HDDs order like this and choose “RAID 0”:

4.5 check total size:

4.6 go to left panel (Drivers) and at you virtual RAID right click mouse, select“Recover All Files” : (If you only need some files you want. Please jump to 4.9)

4.7 Choose recover files save to where: (Here I choose more free space D:\)

4.8 When done. You can see recover files at d:\

4.9 if you choose “Open dive files”:

4.10 Waiting……..

4.11 Done!! You can see all files. (Some Red Cross mark file is dead. You can’t recover it!!) Others you can choose to recover…..

  1. Access Deleted RAID-5 data using R-Studio

1. Create 3-disk RAID-5

2. Put DATA on the RAID

3. Delete DATA from RAID

4. Connect all HDD to a PC by USB

5. Run R-studio to recovery the data.

2.0Put data on the RAID:

3.0Delete DATA from RAID:

4.0Connect all HDD to PC by USB

4.1 We unplug all from NAS.

4.1 Use SATA convert USB cable to connect PC

4.2 When you plug-in these 2 HDD to PC. PC can’t identify EXT4 file system / partition , So you can’t see them at your Windows file management

4.3 But R-Studio can identify them:

5.0Run R-Studio to recovery the data.

5.1 All QNAP NAS file store at 3rd partition:

5.2 choose “Create Virtual RAID”“Create Virtual Block RAID”

5.3 Right panel (Parents) will show, Use mouse right click at add these 3 HDDs in list:

5.4 Please let your HDDs order like this and choose “RAID 5”:

5.5 go to left panel (Drivers) and at you virtual RAID right click mouse, select“scan” :

5.6 Start scan your HDD:

5.7 1TB will take 11 hours:

5.8 After scan done. Choose first block (928.53GB) “Open Drive Files”:

5.9 You can see what you delete in Qweb folder: (Some Red Cross mark file is dead. You can’t recover it!!) (No luck this time……)

5.10 Choose recover files save to where: (Here I choose more free space D:\)

5.11 When done. You can see recover files at d:\
