JOB TITLE: Youth worker – Shabbat and festivals
LOCATION:Woodside Park
WORKING HOURS:6 hours per week plus Yom Tovim. Shabbat mornings plus weekday preparation and occasional Thursday evenings.
SALARY AND PACKAGE: £2000pa

- MAIN PURPOSE OF JOB
- Organise Shabbat and festival youth services for years 6 and above.
- To inspire and enhance young members’ connections with vibrant, authentic Jewish life.
- To liaise with other paid staff and volunteers to deliver exciting and engaging programmes for young people in Woodside Park on Shabbat or Yom Tov mornings.
- To nurture our youth to be leaders for the next generation.
- DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Services: Toplan and organise efficiently the youth service on Shabbat and festivals; to include as many youth as possibleand to help prepare our youth members, male and female to play an active part in services.
- Communication to
a)Encourage via the appropriate social media for the age group to for as many people as possible to attend and participate on a Saturday/Yom tov morning.
b)Contact in person youth to encourage them to attend on a Saturday/Yom tov morning.
- Engagement – to engage as many youth as possible in services and any related Shabbat and Yom Tov activities
- Role Model: To act as role model within the community
- Encouragement - to encourage the youth to attend events set up either specifically for them or for the community, for example particularly Shabbat UK.
- Children: As part of a greater youth strategy to reach out to children and to include helping, when required, to run social and educational activities for primary school aged children including clubs, squads and events.
- Administration: To be responsible for some administrative duties including ensuring that the database is maintained, appropriate years are notified of events and that events are marketed and publicised etc.
- GENERIC DUTIES
- Committed to the aims of the United Synagogue and act as an ambassador for the organisation
- Comply with The United Synagogue’s policy and procedures and code of expectations
- Bring to the attention of senior staff any health and safety requirements, which become obvious. In the event of any immediate danger, to take the appropriate action to reduce risk to physical danger to employees, members, contractors, volunteers, children, parents, visitors or staff
- Work collaboratively with other colleagues across the organisation to ensure the United Synagogue can achieve its vision, mission, and strategy
- Undertake appropriate training as requested by your line manager in conjunction with the Human Resources Department and be committed to own continuous professional development
- Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Chair or designated senior staff/undertaking such other duties that occasionally fall within the purpose of the post

- Accordingly, a valid and current enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) certificate (formerly CRB) that is satisfactory to the United Synagogue will be required; please ensure that you complete the United Synagogue Application Form Part 2 appropriately

Criteria / Essential / Desirable- Certificate or Diploma in Youth and Community Work
- Counselling qualification

- Proven volunteer experience in a Youth and Community Work
- Experience working successfully with both religious, non-religious and non-committed youth
- Excellent understanding of younger people’s issues (drug abuse, bullying, career choices).
- Understand empowerment of young people and put this into practice.
- Excellent professional relationships skills when working with customers and employees at all levels. Be willing to ask for and listen to ideas and feedback.
- Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
- Ability to motivate affiliated and non-affiliated youth.
- Exceptional phone manner and customer relationship experience.
- Possess excellent interpersonal skills, articulate, intelligent and self-motivated along with the self-confidence to build and maintain strong relationships.

- Proven experience as a strong and proactive team member contributing to the success of the wider team, organisational goals and community, with the willing to undertake tasks on all levels.

- Have a good understanding of the Jewish Community, Judaism and Jewish Values.
- Substantial knowledge of Jewish customs and practices in order to be committed to the philosophy and practice of Orthodox Judaism.
