After the Mayflower
The Mayflower arrived in New England in November 1620, but emigration had begun in 1585 with the arrival of Sir Walter Raleigh in Northern Carolina. This colony failed to thrive but a settlement in Jamestown, Virginia, in 1607 was successful. Between 1630 and 1700 half a million people left Britain, the majority for America.
Despite popular belief only a minority of 36 passengers on the Mayflower were Puritan refugees. Amongst these were possible ancestors of Frank Burroughs and the Hayden family.
Familiar names from Frank’s tree include Thayer and Alden.
John Alden, b. 1598, m. 1622 in Plymouth (Near Boston, USA), d.1687.
Richard Thayer b. 1601 in Thornbury, lived in Braintree, Massachusetts.
John Hayden b. England about 1600 and possibly from Hinton Blewet, lived in Dorchester, Mass. with his brother William. John’s son was supposedly deranged. These brothers may be related to the Cadhay Haydens. As a John Hayden is recorded as being buried in Somerset it seems that this one in the USA may be a cousin of that family.
A male Hayden m. M. Thayer b. 1692, in 1720. The daughter of this marriage. m. a Thayer. This name later became Thayer Dyer.
In 1728 Capt Jonathan Thayer m. Dorcas Hayden.
John Alden, b.1599 in England and from Southampton at one time, m. Priscilla Mullin (met on ship?). This courtship was immortalised in a poem by Longfellow.
Their ggdaughter m. a Thayer in 1706.
Burroughs Ancestors.
These originally came from Kings Stanley, three miles S-W of Stroud.
Frank’s father remembered his father saying that they came from Kings Stanley.
By the 1630’s people in this area were employed in the woollen industry, developed since the arrival of Flemish families from about 1327 to 1377.
In 1608 81 people in this village worked in cloth, 18 in other trades and 27 in Agriculture.
By 1633 800 people depended on the cloth industry, often weaving on hand looms in their home.
Frank’s father researched all the following from Phillimores Parish Registers and church records of St. George, Kings Stanley.
Lorna has used the Internet and found that the Kings Stanley Marriages 1573 to 1812 were all recorded on it, and also a little more information than Frank’s father found. She also looked at the 1881 and 1901 censuses for more details.

William Burroughs was b. in Gloucester; d. Feb 5th 1935 aged 85. He m. Emma Clark (b. 1849/51 in Bristol, d. 15.6.1926) on 26.7.1874 at Clifton Registry office, Bristol 8.
They had 11 children of whom 2 died in infancy.

Deaths of these 2 are 2.4.1855 and 18.4.1822
Mary’s mother was Mary Barnet, father George Lusty, so can we assume that the widow Mary Lusty remarried George Baker in 1799 and d. in 1822?

The family emigrated to the US on 30 April 1866 from Liverpool to New York in the ship John Bright.
