However,whatayearthishasturnedouttobe!Somanyevents,somanyworkshops,theAGMinBrightonandsomanytripsaroundthecountry.TheBoardofTrusteeswelcomedthreenewmembersonboard.ThreeWIladieswhohavetheWIclosetotheirheartswhohavesigneduptodotheirbestforallofus.NewCommitteeChairswerevotedintoofficeandhavealreadyplannedtheirprogrammesfor2017andmyselfasyournewChairenjoyingeveryminuteanddeterminedtodomybestforyouandmakeadifference.
Myfirstvisit,outandabout,wastooneofthemoststunninglocationsinthearea.TheladiesinMarskeinSwaledalegavemethebesteverwelcomeandlaidonaspreadfitforaqueennevermindaFederationChair.ItookMichelle,ourFederationSecretary,withmefortheeveningasIamawaresomeofourmembershavenevermetMichelle,havemaybespokentoheronthetelephone,butitissonicetoputafacetoanameandsheisaveryimportantpersoninourFederation.Itwasalovelyevening,Imetaladywhohasbeeninourorganisationfor75years(whatanachievement!),andMichelleandIenjoyedthemusicquiz,hadalovelynatterandnowlookforwardtomorevisitsoutandabout.

Ithasbeenanotherbusymonthforallourmembers. FirstlyImustpassonmycongratulationstoourthreesuccessfulentrantstoTheLadyDenmanCup,itwasaverydifficulttasktoselectthreefromallourentriesbecausethestandardwasveryhighbutthedecisionwasmadeandthesuccessfulentrantswhoseworkwasforwardedtonationalare:JacquelineGreen(HampsthwaiteWI),ChristineLittler(GlusburnCrosshillsWI)andCarolynScarr(CononleyWI).Mycommiserationsgototheunsuccessfulentrantsandpleasedonotbedeterredfromenteringanotheryear.

AsmallbutselectnumberofWImembersvisitedWendyJakeman'sgarden,whichwasopentoraisemoneyforDenman.Theyhelpedtoraisejustover£160whichwassentfromSkeltononUreandHelperbyWIstotheDenmanappeal.Itwasaparticularsuccessthankstovolunteerswhohelpedwiththecatering.Wendy'sgardensareopenaspartoftheNationalGardenSchemeandsheisalwayswillingtoshowgroupsofladiesround,eveningordaytime,.
JanBellofUrewithLeyburn -Openedhergardensandraisedover£180forDenman.
HackforthWIenjoyedanopengardencompletewithmodelrailwaythankstooneoftheirmembersandherhusband.Combinedwithteaandcake,theeventraised£140forDenman.
SpaSweetheartsWItookovertheWesleyChapelincentralHarrogateforacoffeemorning,servingdrinksandcakestohungrySaturdayshoppers.Theyhadalsohadtheforesighttoofferhotpulledporkrollswithhome-madecoleslawand,theweatheroutsidebeingcoldandwet,theysoonsoldout!Combinedwithatombola,fundsraisedonthedaywereintheregionof£500.

Wellwhatfun24ofushadplayingthisgameonthemostbeautifulsummerevening!ThislargegroupofveryexcitedandperhapsratherjitteryladieswasgatheredtogetherbyHeather,our‘responsibleadult’. Ourinstructor,Nigel,beganbygivingusabriefbutveryinterestingbackgroundtothegameofpétanque(Frenchboules),explainingthatitisverysimilartoourownbowls.Hethenwentontodemonstratethecorrectthrowingaction,usingthearmlikeapendulumtobowlunderarm,tossatanyheightorevenroll.Theusualmethod,hetoldus,wastoholdthequiteheavymetalboulewiththepalmfacingdown,releasingitwithbackspinfromthefingersforgreatercontrol.Thefirstplayerinateamdrawsa50cmcircleneartheendofthepiste,beingsuretostandinsideittothrow.Infacttheword‘pétanque’itselfmeans‘feetfirmlyplanted’,eithertogetherorastride.Nigelnextshowedus,alongwithhisfriendCharles,howacompletegamewasplayedoutandhowpointswerescored.
Ourmomenthadthenarrived–itwasourturntogiveitago!Inteamsofthree,mixingupthedifferentWIsasmuchaswewereable,weplayedagainstanotherteambythrowingtwobouleseach.Thefirstplayerstoodinthecircleandthrewthecoche(jack)6to10metresdownthepisteandabout50cmfromtheedge.Thesameplayerthenthrewtheirfirstbouleascloseaspossibletothecoche.Thefirstplayerfromtheotherteamthentriedtothrowtheirfirstboulenearertothecoche.Fromthispoint,theteamthatwasfurtherawayfromthecochecontinuedtoplayuntiltheywerenearerthecocheorhadusedalltheirboules.Whenbothteamshadthrownalltheirboules,theteamclosesttothecochescoredpointsforthenumberoftheirboulesclosertothecochethanthenearestoftheiropponents'.Thegamescontinueduntiloneoftheteamshadgained13points.FortunatelywewereveryablyassistedinthescoringbyNigel’steamofthreechapswhoalsokeptthepeaceonoccasionbyjudgingwhichboulewasclosesttothecoche,usingatapemeasureasrequired!
Asourthrowingaccuracyimproved,someextremelycompetitivespiritscertainlycametothefore!Iwasluckyenoughtobeamemberof‘TeamTina’(aStrayLady)withmyfriendPatand,havingallgotthehangofitquitewell,weproudlybecamechampionsofourgroupoffourteams!IwilldefinitelyplayPetanqueinthefuturewithfamilyandfriends–indeed,thefacilityisopentothepublicandsuitableforallagesandabilities.MyadviceistohireyourselfsomeboulesfromOxfamwhichisjustacrossthewayfromthepistesandhaveareallyfuntime!
GapingGill–WeDidIt!!byMargaretCreek,AskwithwithWestonWI
WehadanearlystartonThursdayandby8.30wewerestartingthewalkfromtheprettyvillageofClaphamuptoGapingGill.Theweatherforecastlookedsomewhatwetallday,butasusualtheygotitwrong,itwasabitdamptostartwithbutitdidn’trainfortherestoftheday!Withfamilyandfriendsthereweresevenofusinourparty.
It’sapleasantwalkupthoughtheIngleboroughestateandpastthetarnandcaves.Wekeptupasteadypaceasweknewtheticketscouldselloutfastforthedescent.TrowGillwasabitofachallengebutwemanaged. WereachedGapingGhyllafterabout50minutesandregisteredimmediatelyforthedescent.Wehadabout1.5hourstowaitsoitwascoffeeandsandwichestime!
Wedonnedourwaterproofsandhardhatsreadyforthedescent,ittakesabout2minuteseachway.Weweresecuredinthebosunschairandthenloweredintothemainchamber.Thewinchisdrivenbydieselandlowersyousteadilydown.ThestreamthatusuallygoesdownGapingGillisdivertedforthewinchsothereislotsofspraybutyou’renotgoingdownawaterfall!!Forthefirst50′orsowewerefairlyclosetothewallasitdescendsthroughtheopening,it’sprobablyabout20′across…thenitsuddenlyopensupintoaHUGEcavern!
Itishugedownthere,IcanwellbelieveitisthesizeofYorkMinster.Therewasacavertheretowelcomeusandtogiveusaguidedtour,showingusvarioustunnels,faultlines(athickwhitebandgoingallroundthecave)stalactites,hetoldusthestoriesoftheearlyexplorers.Theyhadspotlightsaroundthecave,thewaterfalllookedamazing,afterthetourwewerefreetowanderroundasmuchaswewantedbutweprettymuchallcamebackuponcethetourhadfinished.
Itwasanamazingexperience,wewereluckywiththeweatherasIthinktheforecastputalotofpeopleoffsothereweren’tbigqueues,butitwasn’tbadenoughtocloseit–therewas30′ofwaterdownthereonMonday!!Ifyouhavetheopportunitytogodown,goforit!
