Story: Mole and the Baby Bird
We are going to read a story about a mole that keeps a baby bird for a pet.

Story Comprehension
Why does Mole think the baby bird needs help? The baby bird is on the ground where it could get hurt, and Mole knows it should be in a nest.
What does Mole do to take care of the baby bird? First, he builds a nest for it; next, his friends help him find food; last, his mother shows him how to feed it when it chirped.
How does Mole’s mother know the baby bird is ready to fly? The bird fluttered its wings.
Why doesn’t Mole want the bird to fly? The baby bird will fly away, so Mole won’t have it as a pet anymore.
Why does Moles dad think the baby bird should fly? It’s not a pet bird. It’s a wild bird.
Why is the bird sad? The bird is sad because it is in a cage and can’t fly.
What do Mole and his granddad see? They see fields, fences, houses, and lots of open space.
What is the most important idea Granddad wants Mole to learn? Birds are meant to fly.
What happened first, next, and last in this story? First, Mole raised a baby bird. Next, he put it in a cage so it wouldn’t fly away. Last, he realized that birds are meant to fly and he let the bird go.
