Course Name - Developing an Online Portfolio with Muse

Timeline - Flexible to be used in as little as two weeks (one hour a day) or an 8 week course (one hour a day).

Optional - could be used to design an online course where students could work at their own pace.

Learning Objectives:

Upon completion of the training Developing an Online Portfolio with Muse, the student will be able to:

  1. Outline five of the key elements of web design.
  2. Define site goals and target audience for a website.
  3. Create a site plan for the website.
  4. Explore options and best practices for using Planning, Design, and preview mode.
  5. Design a template for a Muse website using Master pages.
  6. Create a navigation bar and use it consistently across the website.
  7. Identify main components of an effective online portfolio.

Activities:

  1. Sequence:
  2. Through lecture and small/large group discussion, students will learn about key elements of web design and effective online portfolios.
  3. Class time will be given to students to work thru their site goals, target audience, and site plan for their portfolio. Instructor will be providing guidance as they work.
  4. In Hands-on practice, students will practice Planning, Design, and Preview mode, as well as setup their Master Pages.
  5. After a large group lecture and discussion, students will create and design their navigation bar. Class time will be given for this task (more than one session if time is available).
  6. The last week or the last couple days of the course will allow the students to share their portfolio website. (assessment)
  7. As time allows, and student interests is given the class will explore the various widgets available in Muse. As this is an online portfolio, many of these will be suggested for other projects.
  1. Depending on the length of the course one or more topics could be covered in one session. Ideally, there would be one week for each learning objective.
  1. Hands-on practice via whole group and individual learning processes will follow each of the learning objectives discussions.
  1. Students will ideally have access to Muse when not in class either via their own computer or a computer lab. Students will most easily progress and maintain satisfactory progress with the course with addition work outside of class. (approximately 5-10 hours a week)

Assessment:

The last week of class, the students will each present their site either via Live Demo or prerecorded demo. Students will be asked to critique each portfolio and provide thoughtful suggestions for revisions.
