Welcome to the Wonderful World of English
Course Requirements: In this course, you will strengthen and refine your use of English both through literature and through writing. You will be graded according to your proficiency in the following core areas of language: Reading, Writing, Speaking, and Listening. Grades will be determined through classwork, homework, projects, quizzes, and tests. **All instruction will be based on the Common Core.
Materials:
- 1 binder with dividers
- Loose leaf paper*
- #2 pencils*
- Pens: blue, black, and red*
- Highlighters
- Index cards
- Sticky notes
- Colored pencils/markers
- USB Drive
*These are indicated as extremely important supplies. The student must remember to have these on a daily basis.
Course Expectations:
- Always come prepared to class with all of the required materials.
- Be respectful to all that are in this class as well as those who visit our classroom.
- Always participate and try your hardest!

Classroom Procedures:
A. Beginning of Class: Please come in quickly and quietly. Be in your seat by the time the bell rings.
B. During Class: You must stay in your seat unless given permission or are instructed to do otherwise.
C. Food and Drink: You may have a drink in my class but no food (unless approved by instructor).
D. Assignments: It is essential that you complete all assignments on time and to the best of your ability.
E. Dismissal: You must stay in your seat until the bell rings.
**If you want my attention while I am speaking, raise your hand! I might not call on you immediately, but I will acknowledge you and you I will respond to you when it is deemed appropriate.
Course Assignments:
Writing:
You will have FOUR papers due this semester. The four papers fall under the following categories: Narrative, Argumentative, Literary Analysis, and Research. Each paper must be between 4 and 6 pages in length. I will not accept a paper that is not in MLA format.
Speaking:
Throughout various times in the class, you will participate in a variety of discussions. These could come in the form of small group, whole group, asynchronous, or Socratic Seminar. Your participation is mandatory and will be graded.
Reading:
As this is an English class, it is assumed that you will read. While reading, you are required to annotate your text. This allows you to have a deeper understanding and more real connection with the current selection. You will read the following types of literature: Nonfiction, Short Stories, Poems, Drama, and Novels.
Bell Ringers:
There will be TWO types of bellringers in this class. The first type is an article that you will read at home every week. You will receive the article on Monday and it will be due by Friday. You will also participate in grammar warm ups throughout the week. These two assignments consist of a weekly class grade and a weekly homework grade. You will have a grammar quiz once a month.

Make-up Assignments:
It is your responsibility to get your homework assignments when you are absent. Please find a buddy in your class that will help you on the days that you are absent. However, also please see me before or after class in order to make sure that there are no other assignments.
