Internship Handbook
Elkin City Schools
Internship Program
Effective communication is a major key for success in this program.
- You are to communicate with Mrs. Burgess via email or call her office at 835-3858 ext. 249.
- Check your emails daily.
Office Sign In/Sign Out
- Before leaving school for Internship, interns must sign out via EHS office computer.
- When returning to school after Internship, interns must sign in via EHS office computer. (This does not apply to 4th period interns.) Failure to sign back in at office after returning to school will result in a discipline referral.
Attendance
- Interns are expected to go to their intern site every day. Be punctual and stay the entire time.
2. If an intern is absent from internship, they must call Mrs. Burgess prior to their intern period. If no answer, leave a message with your first & last name and the date. Mrs. Burgess is responsible for interns during their assigned internship time as well as for daily attendance. If intern knows ahead of time that they will not be going to intern site, they may email Mrs. Burgess.
- Interns are responsible for letting their mentor know if they are going to be absent for any reason during intern time.
- If for any reason an Intern does not go to Intern site during their assigned period and signs out from school, the intern should sign based on the sign-out reason—not under Internship. This should be treated the same as if the student were leaving school early from any other class.
- If the school is running a homeroom schedule and the Intern misses homeroom, they are responsible for checking with their homeroom teacher to let them know why they were not in homeroom and to get any missed information.
- If the school system is on a delay, as a result of inclement weather, the Intern is still responsible for going to their internship site. If on Early Release Schedule, the Intern is still responsible for going to their internship. (We still have all 4 class periods, they are just shorter) Listen to intercom announcements and/or check email. Interns also have a copy of EHS Alternate Schedules.
Requirements for Grade
- All paperwork/guidelines for Internship should be kept in a 3-ring binder and taken to the Internship site every day. This will help inters manage requirements for the course including work logs/timesheets, evaluations, journals, etc. A successful intern is an organized intern!
- Interns must participate in blogging activities at the end of each week. Postings for the week of activities must be completed by Sunday at 11:00 pm. See Blogging Activity Guidelines for complete directions.
- Mentor Evaluations are due four times during the semester. See the list of dates for submitting these. Envelopes are provided for mentors to return these. Points will be deducted for each day they are late!! There are NO EXCEPTIONS!
- Internship Weekly Work Logs from the previous week are due on Monday’s to be turned in at the front office (folder beside sign out computer). Mentors must sign these on Friday. If work logs are more than a week late, they will not be accepted. Failure to turn these in will result in loss of acquired time.
- Refer to Due Date sheet for guidelines on turn in dates. Add these dates to your calendar and planners. Turning in required paperwork tasks is critical and will enable you to pass this course.
It will be your responsibility to ask your Mentor for the evaluation on Friday before it is due on Monday.
- The final exam grade for the course will be determined from your exit presentation and portfolio submission.
- Failure to meet the time requirement of 135 hours at the intern site will result in an F for the course.
Business Etiquette
- Appropriate dress is required and expected. All interns are expected to dress “Business Casual” if the Intern site does not have a designated dress code. Refer to the Dress Code info sheet. This may mean wearing something different to the site than what is worn to school on that particular day. Interns should dress accordingly. Time should not be taken at school to redress for Internship unless you are required to wear scrubs. Interns are not to go home or to someone else’s house to change clothes before reporting to their Internship site.
- Interns are expected to follow all Mentor/Business employee guidelines/rules. This includes dress code, employee expectations, etc.
- Intern behavior while on the Intern site should reflect what is appropriate and positive. Inappropriate language, gossip, snooping, etc. will not be tolerated. EHS cell phone policy applies to Internship site. Interns should not be texting, playing games, or using cell phones in any way.
- Interns should not chew gum while at their site.
Emergency Concerns
- If ElkinHigh School is under a “lock-down” or a “stand-by lock-down” and you know it before you leave your internship site, STAY AT YOUR INTERNSHIP SITE until notified. DO NOT leave your internship site and return to school. (This is for students other than 4th period interns that go home after their internship).
