Grade 10 – ELA Pacing Guide Timeline
Recommended Order of Completion:
Unit 2: Romanticism, Transcendentalism, and Realism
Unit 3: Contemporary Realistic Fiction
Unit 1: American Post World War II, Drama
Unit 5: Survival (group-made unit, see following page)
Unit 4: Harlem Renaissance, Post World War II, Drama
Reasoning:
- Units 2 & 3 provide basic introductory reading assignments, with a focus on the student as an active participant in the reading/listening process for the noted texts. For this reason, the units may be used interchangeably as the procedures and outcomes should be similar, varying only in materials and texts used.
- Unit 1 begins higher level order analysis. At this point, students will begin analyzing texts using compare/contrast procedures. Engaging students in the utilization of this level of thinking requires a basis set forth by the formerly introduced units.
- As Unit 1 introduces the concept of the powers of the individual and the individual as a member of an established community, it provides a good segue into Unit 5 (group-made unit). Unit 5 addresses the concept of the individual versus different elements, therefore putting the individual at a crossroads with society / the community versus the individual as a part of the society / community. Completion in the aforementioned order provides organization and continuity of ideas.
- Unit 4 focuses on the highest level of analysis, forcing students to examine concepts that are not easily tangible. As Units 1 & 5 focus on the individual’s interaction with his/her society / community, Unit 4draws on those ideas while also incorporating many negative societal issues the individual must face. The more one-dimensional concepts presented in Units 1 & 5 lendthemselves to the notions presented in Unit 4.
