Weekly Surgeries – Open Daw Dawlish and Pavilions Teignmouth
Open Daw as always is very busy; I have visits from residents and traders now on a regular basis. At the Pavilions, as well as regular meetings with Traders and other organisations, I am now answering increasing numbers of Tourist Information related questions from visitors. I am told that there is a steady flow of visitors coming into the Pavillions enquiring about tourism issues throughout the week and I am concerned, based on my observations on a Tuesday, that the staff may be too busy with theatre bookings and do not have enough knowledge etc.to provide an adequate Tourist Information service.
Town Maps and Notice boards.
I have submitted a request to the Teignmouth F.and G.P. for a notice board outside the Seaview dinner to house a town map and community poster display to replace the one at the T.I.C. It was approved and will be installed as soon as possible.
Events
Queen’s 90th Birthday Celebrations.
I have worked with Teignmouth Town Council and Dawlish Town Council on a joint town’s project to celebrate the Queen’s 90th birthday. We shared resources to reduce the cost for this, we shared entertainment and also hire of the tables etc. the two towns worked well together and we are hoping to do more events together in the future.
Farmers Market- Dawlish
I have started a Farmers market in Dawlish; this will be on a three month trial basis. I have given out booking forms again at the Teignmouth market and have also advertised on the stall holders Facebook page.
Teignmouth Farmers Market
I have had a request from the farmer’s market organiser that she has a long waiting list of farmers/producers that would like to attend and asked if they could extend the market permanently. I have carried out a survey of the effected traders in the Triangle area and will provide the town council with the collated results next month.
Arts Quarter Mosaic Project/Craft Market
A letter was sent to all of the traders in the Arts Quarter asking them if they would like one of the trail mosaics displayed on their shop facades , permission from the landlord and suitable insurance had to be gained. We had a good response and the successful applicants have been informed. Michelle Greenwood Brown will be arranging instillation as soon as possible, we are planning the unveiling at the end of July to coincide with the Craft Market, this will be dedicated to the late Cllr. Geoff Bladon, we were also planning on having the first Antiques market in Teign Street but sadly we have not had much interest in this so far, I am aiming for at least at participation from at least six traders to make it a viable market.
Dawlish Carnival
The planning for the Carnival week is going well, this is taking a large part of my week at the moment but I feel this is important for Dawlish and its traders, myself and Alison Holmes from the Town Council have been sourcing sponsorship and at present have raised nearly £20,000 which will go towards putting on a full week of events. We have been very impressed by the support from the town and its residents and this year’s carnival looks like being a great success.
Taste of the Teign
This event is now progressing well. We have again secured a mobile kitchen for the week and we are hoping that local restaurants will provide food demonstrations in the Triangle throughout the week. We now have a full week of events around the river Teign, including food talks, a foodie quiz, and tours around local farms and vineyards.
The BIZ
After a discussion with the new Chairman of the Teignmouth Traders Association it has been decided that the Biz will be held in Teignmouth from September as long as funding can be obtained for the hire of the room and other expenses.
Play Park Dawlish
Cllr. Roz Prowse and I had a meeting with Tony Watson, Peter Briscoe and Neil Blaney from T.D.C. to present the plans for the playpark. The officers have asked that this is supported by residents as on a recent previous occasion in Dawlish funding was not secured for a project due to lack of public support. I submitted a report to the C.A.C. committee asking for support to take this proposal to public consultation of the 15th July, after a long discussion it was decided that this would be put to a full council meeting.
The Facebook page as now reached 1370 likes and I am receiving more and more emails to advertise events on Facebook and the community screens can I ask those of you who are on Facebook to share these events in the two towns please.
