Region 6 Report Aug 19, 2015
For the SSA Board of Directors Meeting, September 2015 Phoenix
Director John Lubon
Governors
KY - Lee D Jarrard IN – Todd Rutledge
MI – John Harte OH – Brian Stoops
Strengths/Opportunities – Region 6 has many active clubs and most seem healthy. There is good leadership in the clubs and State Gov’s. On Line Contest (OLC) is becoming a great way for all pilots to get visibility on their cross country flights. We should recognize more of the great flights and use this as a way to encourage pilots to fly cross country. Investigate using OLC documentation to automatically qualify for State Records (Suggestion from John Harte)
Caesar Creek Youth Camp
Caesar Creek Soaring Club hosted its 14th successful Youth Camp. Over the years the typical camp is 15-20 and they have flown up to 330 flights over 5 days!! The 2016 Youth Camp is already oversubscribed by 9 youth. The youth camp graduates would be willing to help jump start more youth camps for other clubs that are willing to host.
In addition to flying, the camp focuses on the following:
• Personal growth through goal setting and achievement of goals
• Leadership – on and off the flying field
• Responsibility – Taking responsibility for you actions
• Community – Pitching in and supporting yourself and others around you
• Preparedness – value of planning and being prepared for expected and unexpected events
• Respect – Having respect for yourself , others and equipment

1. Membership at the Louisville Soaring Club has been increasing. Currently at 42 members. In 2003 the Louisville Soaring Club had 3 club ships, 3 private ships and a tow plane. They now have 4 club ships, a tow plane and 12 privately owner ships. Many of our newly licensed pilots have fallen in love and bought ships.
2. New pilots - About a third are transitioning power pilots, a third new pilots and a third UPS pilots looking for fun flying.
3. Airspace issues- The club is located south of Louisville Standiford field at Bardstown, KY. They not have any issues except traffic in and out of Louisville.
They are voluntarily installing transponders in many of the private ships. We are considering transponders for the club aircraft.
4. Examiner -One of their club members is an examiner who is a retired American Airlines captain.
Indiana – Todd Rutledge State Governor
At the Central Indiana Soaring Society, Membership has been decreasing. There are occasional years they get an influx of new members but on average over the last 20 years they loose about 1 member a year.
This year most of our new pilots are coming from a member that has formed a youth flying club. Outside of that they estimate that about 25% of or new pilots come from the fast back program. There are no airspace issues currently. They work with an examiner who comes down from the Fort Wayne area. Focus area for new members should the young post college adults.
