QEP Meeting Minutes
11/29/05
Present: Brian Schwartz, Joyce Hickson, Callie McGinnis, Bill Hortman, Terry Irvin, Cindy Henning, Beth Holmes, Tom Loughman, Arlene Johnson, Jim Owen.
Absent: Gina Sheeks, Jamie Williams
Visitor: Dr. Noreen Lape
Dr. Schwartz opened the meeting and passed out the agenda and other handouts. He introduced Dr. Noreen Lape, Director of the WritingCenter. Dr. Lape distributed a handout on the CSU Writing Fellows Program, elaborated on the components of the Program and accepted questions.
Discussion:
Dr. Irvin: This is a lot to put on the disciplines. Some people will want to go this way and some will not.
Dr. Schwartz: The idea of this was to take some of what's in the Writing Fellows proposal and incorporate it into the QEP.
Dr.Schwartz: In the budget we should allow room for growth of Writing
Fellows and staff, in particular an Asst. Director of the WritingCenter.
Dr. Lape: We could consider building more money into the budget for the growth of the Program.
Dr. Schwartz: Could we define one course in the defined major that would be a writing intense course?
Ms. McGinnis: How about awarding departments and the faculty member to entice them to get involved in a writing enriched course and for developing rubrics in their areas?
Dr. Henning: Are you saying two departments with five sections equal 10 fellows? And ten departments with 25 sections equal 50 writing fellows. If this is true we are in trouble.
Ms. McGinnis: Will the fellow be in the class? If not, how will they know how to teach the students?
Dr. Henning: Can the fellows be used in various classes?
Dr. Lape: If it gets to that, then the fellows will have to be retrained.
Ms. Holmes: Dr. Flateby’s comments lend to this discussion as the gist of her recommendations was for the committee to nail down what the assessment consists of and which population is being assessed? We need to be looking at the whole student body, not that everyone needs to be assessed but to assess the average CSU student.
Ms. Holmes: She is getting from the memo that the QEP must be very specific abut who is being assessed. Must show how the students will improve their writing skills in five years.
Dr. Hortman: For evaluation purposes, we need to show how the students will be impacted by the initiatives we will be putting in place.
Dr. Irvin: I do not think that every student will be involved in this initiative. Must compare apples to oranges and randomly pick freshmen English classes. Look at those same students two years from now and five years from now.
Ms. Holmes: Requested that the committee members look again at the model that Dr. Loughman submitted earlier. Much of what was being discussed is in his model. After much discussion, Henning moved to adopt the model and it was seconded by Johnson. The committee agreed to include this model in the QEP report.
Dr. Irvin: Presented Goal 3 framework with changes:
The area of grammar and usage she left off of 3B, because that should have been taken care of prior. Grammar and usage should be a given by this point. She told the committee that she repeated the goals throughout the framework. Other changes were made by Schwartz and McGinnis. Dr. Irvin will email the Goal to Dr. Hickson.
The next meeting will be Friday, December 2, at 11:30 a.m.
The meeting adjourned at 5:05 p.m.
