1.3 Design Requirements:
- Canopy must conform to local building codes
- Design canopies in accordance with The Aluminum Design Manual 2015
- Comply with the wind requirements of ASCE 7
- Provide expansion joints to accommodate temperature changes of 120 degrees F. Provide expansion joints with no metal to metal contact
- Provide and all welded extruded aluminum canopy system complete with internal drainage. At the sole discretion of the architect, a through fastened canopy system may be acceptable, if designed and fabricated by an approved manufacturer, meeting other specification requirements.
1.4 Submittals:
- Manufacturer’s product information; specifications and installation instructions for canopy components and accessories
- Shop Drawings; Include plan dimensions, elevations and details
- Finish/Color Samples; from manufacturer’s full range of colors
- Design Calculations; prepared by and bearing the seal of a Registered Professional Engineer, licensed in the state where the project is located. Calculations shall state that the canopy system design complies with the wind requirements of ASCE 7, the stability criteria of applicable building code and all other governing criteria
1.5 Quality Assurance:
- Manufacturer Qualifications; A minimum ten (10) years of experience in the design, fabrication and erection of extruded aluminum canopy systems
- Installer Qualifications; A minimum two (2) years of experience in the installation of extruded aluminum canopy systems, similar in design and scope to this project
- Installation shall be in strict accordance with the manufacturer’s shop drawings. Particular attention should be given to protecting the finish during handling and erection.
Part 2: Products

2.2 Materials:
- Aluminum Members; extruded aluminum, ASTM B221, 6063 alloy, T6 temper
- Decking; rigid roll-locked design, self-flashing, with interlocking sections. Roll Formed Decking shall be allowed upon the architects design and/or approval
- Hanger Rods/Attachment Hardware; shall be extruded aluminum and finished to match other components
- Gutter; shall be aluminum extrusion of size indicated on architects drawings and/or sufficient size to drain water properly
- Fasteners; shall be stainless steel
2.3 Finishes:
A.Factory Applied Finish
- Powder Coat Finish to comply with AAMA 2604 or AAMA 2605
- Kynar Finish (70% PVDF), two-coat (primer & color coat) or three-coat (primer, color coat & clear top coat)to comply with AAMA 2605-13
- Anodic Finish, Class I, 215R1 Clear or Color or Class II, 204R1 Clear
- Finish/Color, as selected by the architect from manufacturer’s standard color chart
- Custom colors are available
2.4 Fabrication:
- Factory Assembly; assemble components in the shop to the greatest extent possible to minimize field assembly
- Welding; in accordance with ANSI/AWS D1.2
- Deck Construction; fabricate from extruded modules that interlock in a self-flashing manner. Positively fasten interlocking joints creating a monolithic structural unit capable of developing the full strength of the sections. The fastenings must have minimum shear strength of 350 pounds each
- Deck; extruded self-flashing sections interlocking into a composite unit. Roll Formed Decking shall be allowed upon approval by the architect
- Gutter Frame; factory assemble gutter/fascia frames to form a one-piece welded frame. Welds shall be smooth and uniform using an inert gas shielded arc. Allow for suitable edge preparation to assure 100% penetration. Grind welds only where interfering with adjoining structure to allow for flush connection. Field welding is not permitted. Gutter frames constructed by mechanically fastening components together are not acceptable.
- Gutter Fascia; where applicable, provide “J-shaped” gutter fascia in manufacturer’s standard size and profile
- Fascia; where applicable, provide fascia in manufacturer’s standard size and profile
- Beams; where applicable, provide open-top tubular aluminum extrusion, with appropriate top edge thickness for strength and designed to receive deck members in self-flashing manner
- Hanger Assembly; provide extruded aluminum hanger rods in manufacturer’s standard size and profile, to meet the canopy load requirements
- Fabrication allowances for installation of electrical conduit, lighting, plumbing, sprinkler components, etc., concealed above decking, not visible from beneath the canopy, other than fixture location(s)
Part 3: Installation and Execution
3.1 Installation
- Confirm that surrounding area is ready for the canopy installation. Verify all concrete, masonry, and roofing work in the vicinity is complete and cleaned
- Canopies shall be installed according to the approved shop drawings and plans
- The entire structure shall be installed straight, true and plumb, according to standard construction procedures
- Any and all blocking necessary to install the overhead supported canopy, shall be installed by the General Contractor, per the approved shop drawings, prior to canopy installation
- Canopies shall be installed with positive and negative slope of 1/8” per foot to allow water drainage from top of canopy to draining scuppers/downspouts and eliminate ponding water
- Decking shall be aligned and secured to aluminum frame structure
- Good construction practices and extreme care shall be maintained to protect and eliminate any and all damage to installed decking components during installation. This includes, but is not limited to, standing, walking or performing other work, while on the finished decking
- All joints, corners and connections shall be tight and clean
- All exposed fasteners shall be painted to match the canopy color
3.2 Cleaning:
- All canopy surfaces exposed are to be cleaned after installation is complete
- Surplus materials and debris shall be removed from the jobsite after installation is complete
3.3 Protection:
A. General Contractor shall ensure protection of installed aluminum canopies from other trades, so that canopies are without damage at time of substantial completion of project.
