Objective 9: Presentational Writing: I can write a description of a familiar experience or event.

Context: Your friend has just moved to Miami and almost everyone in that neighborhood speaks Spanish. Your friend has asked you to help review different foods so that he/she can interact with neighbors.

Task: To help your friend, you decide to write a short email message,in Spanish, telling him/her about your favorite meal at a restaurant that just opened in your city. Include many different foods from their main dishes, drinks and desserts menu. Say that the food doesn’t cost a lot and that it is delicious. Your email must be at least 8 sentences long. After you finish writing your message, check to make sure you have used accurate spelling and punctuation, and that the subject of the sentence and the verb agree. Your teacher will use the Intermediate Presentational Rubric to assess your writing.

Objective 10: Presentational Speaking and Interpersonal Communication

Presentational Speaking: Provide basic information about eating in a restaurant using phrases and simple sentences.

Context: You plan to celebrate your birthday at your favorite restaurant tonight. You’ve waited all day for this and are very hungry! In Spanish class, your teacher and classmates sing “Las mañanitas” (a Mexican birthday song) to you. Then, they want to know how you are celebrating.

Task: Tell them about your favorite restaurant.Talk about different things that you typically order and say that something is delicious and that something is good for your health. Name your restaurant and say where it is located. Describe how much your meal usually costs and that you like to eat in that restaurant.

Interpersonal Speaking: I can engage in short social interactions using phrases and simple sentences.

Context: To celebrate the completion of the food unit, your teacher has organized an outing to a local Mexican restaurant. However, she has told the employees to only speak to her students in Spanish.

Task: One student will play the role of a customer in the restaurant and the other student will play the role of the server. The server will ask what the customer would like to order and the customer will request at least 3 items. The server will bring the items and the customer will say that one item is delicious, but one is too hot/cold. The server will ask if the customer needs anything else. The customer will say that he/she needs something. The server will present the bill. Then the server and customer will thank each other.

Objective 11: Culture: I can demonstrate understanding of practices, products and perspectives of the target culture.

Context: Your social studies class is studying Latin America, and your teacher has assigned an oral report. You have to explain everything you know about México.

Task: Use the graphic organizer below to demonstrate your understanding of practices (names, family relationships, lifestyle, art/architecture), products (exports, industries, handicrafts, etc.) and perspectives (where/how people live and why, advantages/disadvantages,comparisons/contrasts) in México to help you prepare for the presentation. You may write in English.
