Project Cell Phone
Overall Goal
The goal of this project is to combine all your knowledge of patterning, algebra, and graphing, to put together a creative presentation as if you were a cell phone salesperson trying to help a customer make a decision about the cell phone plan that's best for them.
You will be presenting this "recommendation" to customers in the form of an advertisement. Be creative! You could do a video commercial, audio commercial or song, poster, PowerPoint, Prezi, spam e-mail, celebrity endorsement (an impersonation of course), or anything else - just make sure that whatever you decide to do, you are able to communicate all the important information to customers - look at the Rubric for how you will be marked!
You will be given a checklist to keep track of all the things you need to do. There is some time provided in class for working on the early stages, but as you start working on the final creative presentation, you will probably need to plan some time outside of class to work on it with your group members.
Phase 1
Phase 1 is Market Research. You will begin to think about your own needs as a cell phone user, and the needs of other people in your class. By interviewing each other and recording the data, you will get a pool of customer information that you can look at and analyze. You will be placed in groups ("sales teams") and each person will choose one customer from their pool of data as their "target customer" for the focus of their analysis. It will be more interesting if each person in your group chooses a customer that is very different from the others in terms of what they need in a cell phone plan.
Phase 2
Phase 2 is Analysis. You should focus on answering the questions that appear on your Progress Checklist, and making graphs or other visuals to help customers understand. Each group member should do their OWN analysis for THEIR customer. Help each other to understand how to do it, but don't do the work FOR somebody else. There will also be 2 periods booked in the library for you to work on the computers for graph-making, word processing, presentation work, etc.
It is not expected for you to focus on any extra "What-If" ideas, such as Data Plans, Long Distance calling, etc. Speak with your teacher if you are way ahead of schedule and think you may have the time for it.
Phase 3
Phase 3 is Creating a Presentation. This is where most of your energy should be spent. Groups will decide HOW they want to present their ideas. There will not be time for live performances in class, so anything you create must be recorded somehow and then submitted digitally or in hard-copy. It is important that you choose something that can be achieved REALISTICALLY by the due date. Ask your teacher if you are unsure.
Groups then create a list of mini-jobs that need to be done for their presentation. Divide these jobs as equally as possible within the group so everybody has something important to do, record your jobs on your Checklist, and show the list to your teacher for a "fairness-check."

Think about the different cell phone plans and figure out how much each one will cost your customer.
Create an algebraic equation to show how you could calculate this for ANY number of minutes they use.
For Plan A to be the best deal, how many minutes would your customer need to use?
For Plan B to be the best deal, how many minutes would your customer need to use?
For Plan C to be the best deal, how many minutes would your customer need to use?
Are there any situations where 2 plans might end up costing your customer the same?
Find a way to model / present this information to customers in a way that they will find easy to understand. Create visuals as needed.
If your customer has no reason to switch to IsaacCo. (their current plan is better), is there anything extra you want to add to your analysis? A special promotion to lure your customer?

Brainstorm and decide on a way your group will advertise the recommended plans to your “target” customers (e.g. video, PowerPoint, etc.) Remember the due date (Nov. 22), and choose something you will be able to accomplish in time!
Decide how your analysis will be used / presented in the finished product.
On a sheet of paper make a list of smaller jobs your group will need to do to get everything done by Nov. 22. Some jobs can be done independently, and some may need to be done with the whole group together.
