Room 21 Policies and Procedures

Dear Parents,

I would like to communicate some more detailed information with you about the policies and procedures we use here in Room 21. In this packet you will find a list of necessary supplies for your student to bring to school and a getting-to-know-you questionnaire. Additionally, many written and illustrated classroom rules and procedures will be posted on my staff page on the KLA website within the next week.

Supplies: Please send the requested supplies to school with your student as soon as you are able. Also, please note that supplies will be kept at school to minimize lost and forgotten supplies, with the exception of the home-school communication folder and school-issued planner. These items will be sent home each day with information from school as well as homework to be completed. They should be sent back to school each morning with completed homework, forms to be returned to school, and any notes you wish to send.

Backpack and Supply Checks: We will be participating in the school-wide backpack check routine. Every Tuesday when students arrive in the morning we will check that their backpack is clean, organized, contains only school-appropriate items, and that they have all of the supplies listed on the supply list. Students who do not meet these requirements will be aided by a teacher to clean and organize their bag and have a list of necessary supplies sent home. Student performance on backpack checks influences their citizenship grades. When a supply form is sent home, please sign the form and return it to school indicating when the student will have the necessary supplies.

Drop Off: When you drop your student off in the morning, they will be expected to enter the gates of wisdom on their own. If they would like free breakfast from the school cafeteria, they must arrive by 7:15. Students may eat and socialize until 7:25 at which time they line up with Ms. Hendrick and head back to the classroom. Students who have not entered the gates of wisdom by 7:30 are considered tardy. Tardy students must enter through the front office to receive a pass. Parents must call or walk into the front office to excuse their student's tardy with our attendance clerk, Ms. Christina. Tardy students are assigned lunch detention, as per the KLA school-wide tardy policy.

Pick Up: During afternoon pick up, myself or Ms. Vasquez will walk all students out of the front gates at 2:50 pm. Students who walk home should leave campus immediately. Students who are picked up by parents will be waiting by the tree in the front of the school. If students need to stay after school for a club, detention, or to work with me, they will call home during the school day to discuss arrangements with you.

Homework: Homework will be sent home in folders daily, beginning Monday 9-8-13, and students will have all assigned homework written in their planners. Homework assignments will be written in planners on the day the assignment is due. Please check your student's planner each night for assignments. If there is no assignment, they will write “no homework.” Also, feel free to help students with homework as necessary. Students will be able to earn a penny towards the purchase of classroom prizes for each homework assignment turned in on time as well as a point towards their citizenship grade. Assignments turned in late will receive one half point. Each Tuesday, any student who is missing homework will be asked to call home and stay after school with me to finish their work.

Grades: Progress reports will be sent home every six weeks. Academic grades will be based on student improvement on both IEP goals and other academic learning targets. Citizenship grades will be broken into four parts – 25% for citizenship points earned for appropriate behavior in class, 25% for returning homework, 25% for having appropriate supplies, and 25% for keeping up with parent signatures as outlined below.

Signatures: In an effort to assure that families are informed about students' school lives, I ask for parent signatures on almost all home-school communication. We will track each requested signature and students will receive one point for signatures returned on time and one half point for signatures returned late. Students who are missing any parent signatures on Tuesday mornings will be asked to call home and inform parents about the signatures they are missing. Signed forms will be returned home initialed by teachers to indicate that we have recorded the signature so that families may keep the forms for reference. These points will constitute 25% of students' citizenship grades.

Absences: When students are absent from school they are responsible for making up all classwork and homework. Students who have more than 3 items of make up work waiting to be completed on Tuesday mornings will be asked to call home and arrange to stay after school to finish their work.

Daily Snack: At the beginning of 3* daily students will be given 7 min. in which they may eat a snack they bring from home. Snacks must comply with the KLA nutrition policy. Students will not be permitted to eat snacks which do not comply. The full nutrition policy is available on KLA's website. The snack dos and don'ts are listed below.

Questionnaire: In order to get to know you and your student more thoroughly, I ask that you fill out the attached questionnaire. Please fill it out with your student. Space is provided at the end for any additional comments or questions you may have. Please feel free to attach extra sheets as necessary. Questionnaires may be returned in student folders at your earliest convenience. I know that many of you filled questionnaires out last year, please do so again as situations may have changed, such as family members entering or leaving the household or gaining or losing computer and internet access.

Cologne: Students are not permitted to wear cologne or bring cologne to school. Both myself and another student in our class are allergic to perfumes, so this is very important to our health. Students who come to school wearing cologne will be given a loaner shirt to change in to. Any cologne found in student backpacks will be confiscated and given back after students have been walked off campus.

Please feel free to contact me at any time with questions, comments, or concerns you may have.
