First Aid Booking Process – Foster Carers and Family Link Carers
Introduction
It has been agreed that the most appropriate course for foster carers is the St John Ambulance Early Years First Aid course (see details below). This 2 day course (12 hours in total) covers all aspects of First Aid. Whilst the primary focus is on children under 8 the course does cover procedures for other age groups. Re-qualification of the Early Years First Aid training is required to be completed through repeat attendance of the original training course at periods not exceeding three year intervals priorto the certificate expiry date.
The Foster Carer or the Family Link Carer should book the first aid training directly through St John Ambulance who are the corporate recommended training provider for First Aid training. Special discounts and insurance arrangements have been negotiated with them.

We recommend that people do NOT use the website to book a place on a course as they will be charged the standard rate and not the reduced rate agreed in the HCC contract. The following information is required to make a booking -
the Hampshire County Council contract number which is HS1916
CSD account number which is E-HAMP0247
Delegate’s name and address (required for sending joining instructions and certificates).
Please note that course fees will only be paid if the correct paperwork has been received by the CSD Workforce Development Team in advance of the training and after St John’s confirm that the delegate has attended and passed.
Pre Course
- Foster Carer or Family Link Carer to discuss and agree attendance on first aid training with supervising social worker. The Foster Carer or Family Link Carer should, at this stage, be issued with aRequest for Funding for First Aid Training
- Foster Carer or Family Link Carer to book the 12 hour Early Years First Aid course directly with St John Ambulance.
- Foster Carer or Family Link Carer to complete and return the
Request for Funding for First Aid Trainingto the Children’s Services Workforce Development Team at or by post to Northfields House, Humphrey Farms, Twyford, Hampshire SO21 1QA.
- If extenuating circumstances mean that a booked place needs to be changed, the Foster Carer or Family Link Carer should do this direct with St John’s and inform the change
Post Course
- St John Ambulance will notify the Children’s Services Workforce Development Team of attendance or non-attendance after each event. Any non-attendance will be followed up with the supervising social worker concerned.
- Children’s Services Workforce Development Team raise payment to St John Ambulance.
Certificate Renewal
St John Ambulance will send refresher course reminder direct to Foster Carer.
Early Years First Aid
This course is a paediatric first aid course and meets the requirements of the Early Years foundation stage statutory framework.
The course focuses on emergency scenarios that are faced by professionals, including teachers, au pairs and playgroup leaders, looking after young children.
It meets Ofsted requirements for registered childminders and the requirements for nannies under the DfES Approved Carers Scheme. It can also be used as evidence for employees working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education.
Who should attend?
This course is for people working with younger children - those up to eight years old – or working towards an NVQ in Childcare and Education.
