2.  ASSIGNMENT OVERVIEW

Port Moresby Nature Park has experienced significant organisational growth and change. It has been identified that there is the need to focus more strongly on the capacity development of our staffs, in the many varied roles to run a combined botanical, zoological and cultural park that will to assist in driving continuous growth and improvement and change management within the organisation. In addition, there is a noticeable variance in training and performance between newer and older staffs, particularly as older staffs were able to receive a lot more verbal instructional training due to the organisation being much smaller at the time. Due to the growth and demands on management, newer staff are no longer getting the same training and learning opportunities.

The Nature Park wishes to take a progressive approach to long-term capacity development and engage an instructional designer, a position which presently is not active in PNG to establish systems for on-boarding, department training, policy and procedure awareness training strategies that will give the organisation long-term consistency in staff performance and activities and ensure that should the expatriate senior management team leave, that the local staff will have the full capacity to run and continue to grow the organisation.

Historically, the Nature Park has been very oral in its training programs and this role will see that our oral processes are formally documented and that processes are developed that will ensure the staff are trained in a way that enables them to fully grasp the organisations roles. This is an exciting first-time opportunity for PNG to see the benefits of a hands-on instructional designer.

7.  LIVING AS A VOLUNTEER

Port Moresby (POM) is the capital of Papua New Guinea, and the country’s largest city. It is located on the shores of the Gulf of Papua. During World War II it was central to the battle between Japan and Australia. With a population of approximately 400,000, it is the centre of trade, business and politics in Papua New Guinea.

POM is a tropical city, and therefore has a wet and dry season throughout the year, with relatively constant temperatures ranging from 28-32°C. However, depending on the time of the year the temperature can drop to 26°C and rise to 34°C.

POM has a notoriously bad reputation for security. This must be taken very seriously by anyone living in POM. To live as a volunteer on the AVID program in POM your movements will be restricted – it is not safe to walk around at night and accommodation will be provided by the volunteer program. During the day, host organisations will organise transport to and from work for volunteers. For all other times, especially after hours, volunteers will be provided with a volunteer transport service, operated by a locally-engaged reputable security transport service. Gym facilities are available, but running or other forms of external exercise (outside a secure facility) is not possible. Volunteers are issued with security devices such as GPS tracking systems to ensure safety at all times.

While life in POM can be restrictive, there is a very active expat life, with access to all modern facilities such as good supermarkets, shopping malls, movie cinemas, good restaurants, and activities at the Yacht Club. It is also possible to participate in activities undertaken by expat groups around POM, e.g. bushwalking, kite surfing, drama groups and sailing.
