Note that the Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) and Montgomery College do not follow the same school closing procedures.

Exams:

There will be TWO exams: a midterm and a final exam. If you miss the midterm you will be given a zero and NO MAKE UPS will be given.

Quizzes:

Expect a quiz every day. Some will be longer than others. Some may be group quizzes. Group quizzes will average to one quiz grade. There will be no make up for quizzes

On an exam/quiz day:

I will not provide calculators/pencils - You will not be permitted to share calculators - You may not hold a cell phone

Homework:

Do it on a daily basis! This is the way of studying math and it’s the only way to master the material. There is a list of suggested problems on the next page. Do more if you have difficulty with the material.

Homework is to be done after every class; sometimes you will be asked to complete an assignment to be brought to class in preparation for the day’s work. In addition to the textbook assignments found at the end of this syllabus, you can expect work on handouts given out in class or posted on my website.

We’ll not have time to cover all the different types of problems in class and it is your responsibility to study those topics on your own. Questions on homework will be discussed at the beginning of each class; however, I recommend you come to my office or the Math Science Center to clarify your questions.

In order to ensure that your work for this course is organized, you will be required to have a 3-ring binder (or a folder of your choice) which contains separate sections for:

·  Notes from class

·  Homework assignments

·  Syllabus, quizzes, tests and handouts – make all corrections to the wrong questions

·  Class notes (unless you prefer to keep these in a separate notebook).

The homework assignments should be written neatly and should include only the relevant calculations, not messy scratch work. You should also include the statement of each problem. (For word problems, you can briefly summarize the statement using symbols, if necessary) Keep the various components of the binder file in separate sections (Do not mix your quizzes in with your homework). Please, do not use spiral paper. NO MULTI-PAGE, UNSTAPLED ASSIGNMENTS WILL BE ACCEPTED.

How Homework is Graded

On each collected homework assignment, several problems or parts of problems will be graded.

Notes: All work must be shown on both homework and tests. If the work is incorrect or missing, no credit will be given. Homework with no work shown is not considered to be done.

If class is not held on the date of a scheduled test, the test will be given the next time class meets. Any other changes in schedule will be announced.

The instructor reserves the right to amend this syllabus as appropriate throughout the semester. Students will be notified of any such changes.

Tentative Schedule

Major Quiz Dates are marked asterisk (*) – We will have short quizzes on all other days

Read the book, the examples, do the margin exercises and the ones suggested below.

If you have not mastered the material do more problems
