Job description
Job purpose
To work with the Head of the Inpatient Unit to provide management and leadership to the Inpatient Unit to ensure the highest standard of patient care in collaboration with other teams involved in direct patient care, and drive the continuous development of the unit to achieve organisational strategies and sub-strategies.
Key Tasks
1. To contribute to the management of the nursing care provided by the Inpatient Unit, working in collaboration with the other teams providing direct patient care to ensure the highest standards of patient care tailored to the needs of individual patients.
2. Working with the Head of Inpatient Services to recruit, motivate, monitor and line manage staff in a positive and empowering style to ensure that they contribute fully to the achievement of organisational strategy and Inpatient Unit Sub-strategy.
3. To work with the Head of Inpatient Unit to ensure that the organisation has in place all systems, policies, procedures and practices to ensure compliance with the framework of standards set by CQC, working with other teams to ensure their understanding and contribution to maintaining compliance.
4. To act as the deputy to theAccountable Officer.
5. To fully investigate clinical incidents as required by the Head of Inpatient Services, producing a report or collating and analysing the information to identify any necessary actions.
6.To conduct regular audits following the agreed programme of audits, providing reports or other information as necessary.
7.To draw up and maintain the monthly rota for the Inpatient Unit, ensuring appropriate cover taking into account patient need, sickness and annual leave. To check timesheets against the rota to ensure accuracy before submitting them to the HR team for payroll in line with the payroll timetable.
8.To support the induction and mentoring of new Staff Nurses through their induction and mentoring/preceptorship programme including the process for moving to Senior Nurse, liaising with the HR department as necessary. To support the student nurse placement a required.
9. To contribute to the development of a competency framework for the Inpatient Unit working closely with the Education and Training Manager
10.Working closely with the Education and Training Manager to lead on the developing and maintaining the on-going competency and skill of the Inpatient Unit team by planning and providing regular training and assessment in nursing procedures ensuring that all members of the team complete their required training to practice, and inducting new members of the team. To maintain personal knowledge and practice in these procedures to support any on-going accreditation and quality of training.
11.To work effectively with volunteers ensuring that they are managed, motivated and monitored in such a way that they are able to contribute to the achievement of agreed Hospice strategy

Person Specification
Essential Education and Qualifications / NMC RegisteredDegree in Nursing/or currently studying
Post Graduate study in specialist palliative care
Evidence of commitment to continuous professional development
Mentorship in practice/or Teaching certificate
Essential Experience / Significant experience of specialist palliative nursing.
Experience of effective line management
Experience of effective clinical teaching and mentorship
Essential Knowledge Skill / Excellent clinical assessment, and symptom management skills
Understanding of clinical audit
Understanding of infection control issues
An understanding of and commitment to multi-disciplinary working
