EMPLOYMENT INFORMATION FOR CASUAL ACADEMIC STAFF

Reporting relationships
Casual academic staff members are responsible to the Dean of School and are assigned responsibilities by the Dean. Direct day-to-day duties are usually assigned by the Topic Coordinator.
Definition of Duties and Salary Payment Codes
The description of duties able to be undertaken by casual academic staff is listed on page 6. The associated salary pay codes are also listed.
Remuneration
Casual academic staff members are paid for agreed work undertaken and completed.
Casual academic staff members do not receive paid or unpaid leave or payment for public holidays.

There is no provision for one-off rates to be paid and payment is only made for hours or sessions worked.
Note: Full-time academic staff members are not eligible to be paid for teaching undertaken in other Faculties/Portfolios which is in addition to the teaching normally required as part of their duties. Financial arrangements for such work would normally be negotiated between Heads of the respective Faculties/Portfolios. Human Resources should be consulted for more information.
Payroll Procedures
Payroll Services in Human Resources Division requires all relevant paperwork prior to commencement of employment to facilitate timely payment of salary to the employee.
Payment for one-off claims will be processed in the next available fortnightly pay cycle and will be taxable.
Superannuation
In accordance with legislation the Superannuation Guarantee Levy is paid for casual academic staff to UniSuper’s Accumulation Super 1 Scheme. No contribution is required from the casual academic employee. The University’s contribution to this scheme will appear on the casual employee’s payslip where applicable on the last payslip of each calendar month. At the completion of employment with Flinders University, casual academic employees should contact the Superannuation Office to make arrangements for either payment or roll-over of their superannuation benefit.
University Policies and Procedures
Casual academic employees are required to observe University policies including human resources and student-related policies and procedures, and policies on Work Health & Safety and Equal Opportunity. Copies of the relevant policies are available via the Flinders University Web home page
Equipment and Resources
Equipment and resources provided by the University remain the property of the University.
Email/Internet
Casual staff may be given access to the University’s electronic communications systems, including email and internet for carrying out their University tasks. Either the employee or the employee’s supervisor can arrange with either Payroll Services (ext 12501 or 15014) or the Faculty/Portfolio’s local computing support staff for a Flinders Authentication Name (FAN) which will give the employee access to a number of University electronic services. These include electronic mail, network services and course materials. Generally FAN details will be created and available for casual employees from the date they commence their employment.

Notice Period
A casual academic employee who is unable to complete the contractual arrangements as agreed should notify his/her Supervisor/Dean of School immediately to avoid overpayment of salary. Either the University or the casual academic employee may provide one day's notice of the termination of the casual employment.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES AND PAYMENT CODES – CASUAL ACADEMIC STAFF

Casual academic employees may be appointed to:
  • lecture in subjects;
  • give tutorial instruction, or
  • demonstrate in practical classes.

They may also be required to:
  • assist in the marking of assignments;
  • be available for consultations with students at specific times for a minimum of 1 hour on at least 2 separate days each week;
  • assist in the preparation of teaching material and the organisation of classes;
  • attend lectures given on the subject in which the casual academic employee is teaching; and
  • attend staff meetings in connection with the subject.

Different codes and rates apply to classification, and the appropriate code should be determined in accordance with the guidelines below. The rates of pay applicable to each code are available at: .
Lecturing
A lecture means any education delivery described as a lecture in a course or unit outline, or in any official timetable issued by the University.
L4 / is paid to a distinguished person who gives a single lecture or a small group of lectures (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 4 hours’ associated work).
L3 / is paid where the lecturer assumes significant responsibility for planning and developing a unit or a large part of a unit, as well as lecturing or where a lecture or a small group of lectures call for special expertise (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 3 hours’ associated work).
L2 / is the standard rate paid for a lecture (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 2 hours’ associated work).
L1 / is paid for a repeat lecture such as a lecture covering the subject matter of a lecture given not long before to another group of students (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 1 hour associated work).
Tutoring
Tutorial means any educational delivery described as a tutorial or seminar in a course or unit outline, or in any official timetable issued by the University.
T1 / is paid for a tutorial that will involve the exercise of autonomous academic judgment or the major responsibility for a tutorial sequence (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 2 hours’ associated work).
T2 / is the standard rate paid for a tutorial (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and two hours’ associated work).
TR1
T3
TR3 / is paid for a repeat tutorial, the original of which was paid for at the rate of T1 or T2. A repeat tutorial is defined as a tutorial repeated within seven days of the first presentation of the same topic (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 1hour associated work).
is paid for a tutorial where the script is predetermined and delivered under close direction of the topic coordinator (rate assumes one (1) hour delivery and one (1) hour associated work).

Demonstrating
Demonstrating is carrying out practical activities to illustrate principles, usually under the supervision of an academic staff member.
D1 / is paid for each hour of demonstration.
Marking
Marking is checking, reviewing and evaluating work submitted by students assigning and recording a mark or level. Assessment of the level of complexity of any marking task is made by the Dean of a School. All marking, with the exception of contemporaneous marking*, attracts a separate payment in accordance with the relevant rate M1 or M2.
M1 / is for marking requiring a significant exercise of academic judgment, usually as a supervising examiner.
M2 / is for routine marking
*Contemporaneous marking, which does not attract any additional payment, means any marking that is:
  • undertaken during a lecture or tutorial or while undertaking demonstrating, or during teaching pratice supervisions and/or
  • undertaken during the delivery component of ‘clinical nurse education’ or ‘speech pathology’ clinical sesson and/or
  • assigned to be undertaken during the above periods.
For clarification, where marking was assigned to be undertaken during the above periods but was subsequently performed outside the period without prior agreement of the staff member’s supervisor, it will not attract additional payment.
Musical Accompanying with Special Educational Services
MUS1 / is the rate paid for the provision of musical demonstration/accompaniment.
Clinical Nurse Education
Clinical Nurse education means the conduct of undergraduate nurse education in a clinical setting.
CN1 / is the rate paid for normal preparation (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 1 hour associated work).
CN2 / is the rate paid for basic preparation (rate assumes 1 hour delivery and 30 minutes’ associated work).
Speech Pathology Clinical Session
SPCS / is the rate paid for a clinical session.
Teaching Practice Supervision
TPS / is the rate paid for each hour of Teaching Practice Supervision which involves liaison, during a student placement, with the school/educational organisation and the supervising teacher(s) and provision of relevant feedback on the student to the University’s Teaching Education Coordinator. This rate does not apply to teachers who undertake the day-to-day classroom supervision of students on placement.

Topic Coordination
Topic coordination means the duties described for ‘full topic coordination’ in the prevailing Flinders University Enterprise Agreement.
TC is the rate paid for each hour of topic coordination duties.
Other
OD1 / This rate includes workshops, practical sessions, student field excursions, clinical nurse sessions (other than clinical nurse education), musical coaching, repetition, musical accompanying (other than with special education service), performance and visual art studio sessions, development of teaching and subject materials (i.e. subject guides and reading lists), consultation with students, supervision and attendance at School and/or Faculty meetings as required, and attendance at lectures given by another academic staff member, where this is directed.
