The regular monthly meeting of the Boeing Employees’ Railroad Club – St. Louis was called to order by President Bob Keeler on January 11, 2005 at 7:00 p.m. Twenty-one members were present at the Bridgeton Trails Branch of the St. Louis County Library.
OFFICERS’ REPORTS
Secretary – Ron Hardy – The minutes of the November 2004 meeting were approved as published in the Roundhouse Review. Motion to accept by Don Landschoot, second by Bill Dowdy.
Treasurer – Bruce Ketts – The Treasurer’s report for November and December 2004 were accepted as presented.
Councilor – Rich Young – The last meeting of the Recreation Council was the annual Christmas meeting, where we elect new Board members and in this case, a new President of the Recreation Council. Bruce Darrough did not run for Council president this year due to his workload and being a State Representative, which kept him away from Boeing a large amount of time. I decided not to run for re-election to the Board due to my workload. Mike Guntly was elected as President and Kent Stubblefield and Missy Rung were elected as new Board members. Mike had been a director in charge of updating the Councilor's Handbook, and he distributed new handbooks to all the councilors. Linda Watson announced that there would be a budget for club activities based on club membership, as it was last year. To date, I have not seen what the budget for the Railroad Club will be.
Linda also announced that Joyce Turner, a longtime Recreation Department worker, was retiring at the end of the year and that she had been allowed to replace her, rather than shrink the Dept. by attrition. Linda also introduced Marguerite Ozburn who is the new editor of the St. Louis Boeing News Now. She wants to spotlight clubs in future issues, so when we have an event such as operating the layout at the Open House Boeing had this fall, we should let her know.
CONDUCTORS’ REPORTS
Swap Meet – Wayne Schimmel – All of the magazine ads have been placed.
I mailed the flyers to the people on the mailing list on December 28th and the first one came back on December 30th.
So far I have 13 people signed up for 28 tables. Prior to the mailing, I received several reservations cut from out of date flyers. I sent a new flyer to those people and none of them has cancelled.
I have very few flyers left. If you need any, see me later. I need a good handful for the St. Charles show on January 22nd.
Our swap meet next spring will be held at the NORTH COUNTY COMPLEX on Redman Rd on April 2nd.
Roundhouse Review – Ron Hardy – Any items you wish to have included in the January newsletter should be to me by January 25.
Items for the February newsletter are needed by February 22.
Library – George Rees – Ed Duddy has overdue materials.
I will be out of town from Jan 10th through mid March. Mike Chizmar has graciously volunteered to man the library in my absence so if you need something, please contact him.
Contest – John Huebner – No report.
Tools – Bob Keeler – No report.
Freight Agent – Vic Dunajcik I have a green hat for Ron Hardy.
I have been approached by a couple of members to see if sweatshirts could be obtained in the green color of the polo shirts (hunter green). They are available at approximately the same price as the white sweatshirts and are of the same weight. I need to know if anyone else is interested, so I order a larger quantity and stock a couple.
I would also like some input as to whether I should stay with the same logo that’s on the white sweatshirt or add the steam engine. If no one cares, I’ll make the decision.
The price of $10 is not firm because I don’t know if adding the steam engine will add to the cost.
Program – No report.
Magazine – Dale Schuk – No report.
Video Library – Dale Schuk – The following members have videos due back at this meeting: Afflick, Wampler and Shindel.
William Affick: Please contact me at work, 234-1379, to make arrangements for the return of the long overdue VCR tapes you have checked out.
HO Modules – Jim McClain/Kevin Brown – We will be picking up the modules from Dale Schuk’s home and possibly Kevin Brown’s home on Friday night January 21st. Set up will being at 7:00 a.m. Saturday morning at the Heart of St. Charles for the St. Charles Railroad Club swap meet. The modules must be running by 9:00 a.m. Anyone interested in helping, fill out a sheet on the front table or call Jim McClain.
N Modules –Tom Mallien – The modules were set up at the St. Louis Zoo over the Christmas holidays. We had good help, good weather and have been asked back again next year.
Anyone wishing to participate in the GATS show this February in Collinsville contact Tom Mallien.
Trailers – Bob Leight – Bob installed the new lights on the small trailer but they now have a short in the wiring. Bob will try to correct before the trailer is used next Saturday.
Trips – Bill Dowdy – We have confirmed a bus for the trip to Jackson, MO on Saturday, April 23rd for the trip to ride the Jackson & Southern. We are getting permission to park on the company property for this day. We will meet at 9:30 a.m., leave at 10:00 a.m. and return by 7:00 p.m. Please forward you deposit of $38 per person as soon as possible and I will hold your checks until April. Deadline for a final count will be March 31st. You may take kids, grandkids, friend, etc. on this trip. We will have a good time.
We have 2 people (1 couple) signed up for the Rome trip so far. Global said that because of the low number that they would not run the trip as planned. So, for the ones who have signed up, they will be transferred to one of their other trips.
We will be meeting with Global this Thursday for them to give us their 2006 plans. More to report on this at the February meeting.
We have started making reservations for the West Coast trip for 2005. The dates are Wednesday, September 14th thru Tuesday, September 27th with 3 nights in San Francisco, 3 nights in Portland, and 2 nights in Glacier National Park. We now have confirmed reservations on Amtrak for the entire trip. Also have reservations at hotels in San Francisco, Portland and Glacier. Deposits have been made. The only problem is getting deluxe accommodations from Portland to Glacier one night. We will use the lottery method to assign the deluxe bedrooms for this one night.
Web Site – Paul Stamer – Paul’s computer has lost the program to update the web site. Paul will get with John Huebner to get things back on track.
Museum Volunteers – Bob Keeler – Trolley work is starting.
Club car – Don Landschoot – Club cars have been reduced to $7.50. We sold 4 cars in the past month.
We have discovered several boxes of club cars that have had the last two road numbers omitted (478 instead of 47800). This apparently was done to make changing the road number easier. If you would like to exchange cars you have, please contact Ron Hardy.
OLD BUSINESS
We have openings for the positions of Program Conductor, Trip Conductor and Councilor. The office of Councilor is an elected position and must be filled during the March elections.
Bill Dowdy reports there were 92 people in attendance at the Christmas party. Amtrak was on schedule when we needed them to be and the weather was great.
NEW BUSINESS
In an effort to find ways to increase participation at our monthly meetings, the idea of an Attendance Drawing was presented. A drawing would be held at each regular meeting of all members in good standing. If that person is in attendance, they would win a gift certificate (i.e. Tinkertown, Mark Twain Hobby Shop, Museum of Transport, Amtrak…) of an amount yet to be determined ($ 35 to $50 range). If that person is not in attendance, no prize would be awarded for the current month and that person would be eligible again the next month. If that person is in attendance, a prize would be awarded and that person would be eligible again the next month as well. Only one prize would be awarded each month. A revision to the budget would be required if this is adopted.

The election of officers will be held during the March meeting. The office of President, Treasurer and Councilor must be filled by a current employee while the office of Vice President and Secretary may be held by a current employee or a retiree. Please consider running for an office.
ANNOUNCEMENTS

The St. Louis Zoo is holding a job fair soon and will be looking for engineers for the Zoo Line Railroad.
A limited number of “Charter Member” patches are available. Charter members are those with badge numbers from 1 through 54. Those who qualify, contact Ron Hardy.

Monticello Railway Museum Photo Train 2005 is on April 30th and Throttle Time is May 1st.
The day will start at 8 a.m. at Nelson’s Crossing Depot at the museum. We will board the train and leave for the 1st photo spot.
There will be two trains operating during the day. One will be a freight with MILW NW2 #1667, freight cars and a caboose. The NW2 will run northbound in the morning and facing south for the afternoon. The passenger train will have CN FPA4/FPB4 and four IC passenger cars. Runby’s will be made along the museum’s ex-IC line. Multiple runby’s will be made at each photo location.
A Saturday night photo session will be held at the museum.
Throttle time on Sunday will be devoted to operating with one of the two trains from Saturday photo shoot. You will be the Engineer for a half hour along part of the museum’s scenic trackage.
The price for the Saturday Photo Train day and night events is $40. The Sunday Throttle Time is $150.

SCRATCHBUILDING!
The Particulars:
Scratch build a piece of Railroad-related Rolling Stock. Must "Ride the Rails".
Scale: Any
Materials: You Provide. Wood, Styrene, Metal, Resin, Marshmallows. Your Call. Underframe, Floor, Body must be scratchbuilt. Trucks/wheels, Couplers, miscellaneous detail parts (Grab irons, brake wheels, brake rigging, lanterns, window frames, etcetera can be sourced from the vendor of your choice or pulled from your spare parts bin.
Use your imagination! Speeders to passenger cars, Boxcars, you name it. Want to build a flanger? Go for it. Plans are available from many sources! Have Fun!
Voting will follow the now-standard routine. Vote for first, second, and third....first place vote worth three points, second place vote worth two points, third place vote worth one point. Talley of vote-point totals decides the winner.
