Blackbeard Information and Comparison Map

Not So Jolly Roger’s Blackbeard:

12-twice as big as other pirates, nasty looking, bad singer, black hair, bristly black eyebrows and mustache

13-beard with four pig tails and ribbons, beard was smoking, had four pistols and a cutlass, crazy and mean

21-scary laugh, smoking hair, red eyes, 3 cornered hat

26-ship was called Queen Ann’s Revenge

27-crew of at least one hundred

32-spoke of “Brethren of the Coast” Rules

54-300 hundred man crew, June 1718 got royal pardon from NC governor and stopped pirating

55-Edward Teach, started pirating again, died fighting Lieutenant Maynard in the Battle of Ocracoke Inlet

National Geographic’s Blackbeard:

-robbed 40 ships in a two year period

-burning cannon fuses tucked under his hat

-6 pistols

-Jolly Roger, name of flag (possibly after nickname for the devil “Old Roger”)

-Blackbeard’s flag has a devil like skeleton holding an hourglass, spear, and bleeding heart

-Buccaneers got their name from boucans, or smokehouses, used by the Arawak Indians

-in 1718, given a pardon by Governor Charles Eden after he swore an oath to give up piracy in

-Maynard and Hyde were two men hired by Virginia governor to find Blackbeard

-Maynard sailed home with Blackbeard’s head on a pole

Teach’s Hole:

-born in 1680 in Bristol, England

-he could read and write (a sign of family wealth)

-by 1718 had almost 700 men under his control

-when Queen Ann’s Revenge was sunk he used the Adventure

-married Mary Ormond, in Bath, NC, shortly before his pardon

North Carolina Maritime Museum’s Blackbeard:

-Golden Age of Piracy was 1689-1718

-wore crimson coat with two swords at his waist

-weaved wicks laced with gunpowder in his hair and set them on fire during battle

-received 5 musketball wounds, and 20 lacerations before dying
