Please note the following:
ENTRANCE EXAMS:
An Audition is required before admission into all Music Degree programs.
*Passing Theory Proficiency Exam or Music Fundamentals wit a B- minimum is a prerequisite to MUS 132 and 133.
A Piano Proficiency Exam is required (See Music Handbook)
LESSONS:
1) Applied major area:
Piano//Instrumental: 16 hrs of applied lessons (8 semesters) or 8 hrs/4 semesters at 100 level and 8 hrs/4 semesters at the 300 level, with an additional 8 hrs./8 semesters of Performance Disciplines.
2) Applied minor area:
Piano/Instrumental: 4 hours / (4 semesters)
Organ or voice is recommended as a secondary instrument for piano majors
ENSEMBLES
As part of the 4.5 hours of ensemble participation required of all majors, attendance in a large ensemble is required during all semesters of enrollment with the exception of piano and guitar majors who are required to participate for two years with the remaining semesters in large or small ensembles. A minimum of 1 semester of small ensemble is required of all majors. All instrumental majors must enroll in 1 semester of Jazz Ensemble. This ensemble requirement may be replaced with MUS 208 Jazz Improvisation I (3) or MUS 207 Jazz Keyboard.
Scholarship students must enroll in 2 ensembles each semester.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS
A grade of C (2.0 on a 4.0 scale) or higher is required in all courses applying toward the Music Performance Major.
Minimum Recital Attendance required for Upper Divisional and prior to Graduation. (See Music Handbook).
An Upper Divisional must be completed in order to register for 300/400 level music classes. (See Music Handbook)
The Music Performance major requires a total of 83 hours, 7 of which are Gen Ed. equivalent, with an additional 46.5 Gen Ed hours.
The Bachelor of Music degree requires a minimum of 120 hours.
Instrumental Majors will select 16 credit hours from the menu of courses below.
A student may complete more than one major as long as each major has at least 24 discrete hours. Please see the Academic Catalog for additional details.
