Upon completion of this course students will understand the fundamental building blocks of the Latin language and will be able to apply this understanding to simple Latin texts, thinking critically about, and showing an appreciation for, meaning in translation of such texts.
Required Textbooks(available for purchase at the Brandeis bookstore):
Jones, P. V., and Sidwell, K. C., Reading Latin: Text(2nd ed., 2016).
Jones, P. V., and Sidwell, K. C., Reading Latin: Grammar and Exercises (2nd ed., 2016).
You will also be receiving grammar exercises, summaries, and Latin texts, which, along with your own vocabulary lists and class notes, should form another “text” for the course.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Attendance is expected at all meetings of the course. If you are unable to attend a class, due to illness, or other circumstances beyond your control, please notify me as soon as possible. A maximum of three excused absences is allowed without penalty.
You are expected to arrive at our weekly meetings having completed the assigned exercises and ready to contribute to the discussion of the material assigned.
For this 4 credit hour course, the expectation is that students will spend a minimum of 9 hours of study time per week in preparation for class (on readings, exercises, preparation for exams, etc.).
ASSESSMENT
Your grade will be based on: attendance, including active participation (10%); quizzes (30%); a mid-term exam (30%); and a final exam (30%).
On the quizzes and exams you will be asked to analyse grammar and to translate from Latin into English and from English into Latin.
There are no ‘make-ups’ for quizzes or exams, except in cases of documented emergencies.
ACADEMIC HONESTY
Academic integrity is central to the mission of educational excellence at Brandeis University. Each student is expected to submit work completed independently, except when assignments specifically authorize collaborative effort.
Violations of University policies on academic integrity, described in Section 3 of ‘Rights and Responsibilities,’ may result in failure in the course or on the assignment, or in suspension or dismissal from the University. If you are in doubt about the instructions for any assignment in this course, it is your responsibility to ask for clarification.
All instances of cheating or other alleged dishonesty will be reported to the Office of Campus Life for possible referral to the Student Judicial System. The adjudication process is also outlined in your handbook, ‘Rights and Responsibilities’. A record of any offence remains in a student’s disciplinary file in the Office of Student Affairs throughout his or her career at Brandeis.
