The Death of Jesus Christ on the Cross.
Text: Lord’s Day15 Q39
- The death on the cross was Accursed of God.
- The death on the cross was the most disgraceful death
- The death on the cross was an atoning death.
- Understand the true meaning of the death on the cross, it was cursed by God to die this death, Jesus being innocent, took upon Him the curse due to His people.
- If you have a God given faith, you are exhorted in this lesson, “I am assured, that He took on Him the curse which lay upon me.”
- “And if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be to be put to death, and thou hang him on a tree; (for he that is hanged is accursed of God).” Deuteronomy 21:22+23.
- “Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us; for it is written, Cursed is every one that hangeth on a tree.” Galatians 3:13.
- Jesus was accused of blaspheming, when He said He is the Son of God. Matthew 26:60-66
- Jesus said, “As Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up; that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish, but have eternal life.” John 3:14-15
- Behold the precious Lamb of God by faith. Do we really understand the depth of the curse that is upon “me?” “For thereby I am assured, that He took on Him the curse which lay upon “me.”
- Salvation, having a saving interest in Christ, and the gift of faith from God, truly is God’s miracle of grace to a sinner; yet Jesus invitation to sinners to come to Him is real and true. As we have read in the Canons 2:5 “The promise of the gospel, together with the command to repent and believe;” is taught to us rigidly, is our duty to make this our serious consideration.
- What do we with Jesus? Leave as many did, then and now? Or do we cry out, “God be merciful to me a sinner.”
- Learn to love the preaching of the cross, the curse of God upon man both original sin and actual sin, value this preaching from out of God’s precious Word, the unspeakable joy and riches in truly having faith in this Lord’s Day, “I am assured, that Jesus took upon Himself the curse which lay upon me.”
