UNM Curanderismo Workshops 2013
& Temazcals (meso-american sweatlodge)
Presented by Rita Navarrete Perez and Toñita Gonzales
Rita Navarrete Perez, and Tonita Gonzales are traditional healers/curanderas from Mexico and New Mexico, with clinics in Mexico City, Mexico; Mataxhi, Mexico; and Albuquerque, NM. Together they share the goal of empowering others to become their own healers by listening to their own bodies. Over 5 years ago they started La Cultura Cura, a non-profit Mexican community organization to promote the health and well being of an Otomi community. Rita is a professor of Traditional Medicine at Centro de Desarollo Humano Hacia la Comunidad in Cuerrnvaca, Mexico (CEDEHC). Rita and Tonita partner in the Traditional Medicine without Borders: Curanderismo in the Southwest & Mexico class every summer at the University of New Mexico.
Rita and Tonita currently practice: sobadas (hands on energetic/physical healing), limpias (energetic cleansings), temazcals, (Meso-American sweatlodges), Hieberas (herbalists), and Nutricion (nutrition). In addition, Rita practices quiropraxia (traditional bone-setting), and Tonita practices acupuncture. Their goal is to educate others in traditional healing, and remind them that our ancestors had the right tools for healing. They strive to educate communities and help them understand that the key to health is to be physically, emotionally, mentally, and spiritually balanced.
Presentations are bilingual. Pre-registration with payment is required and each event is limited to 25 participants.
