What is a multigenre project?

A Multigenre Project presents multiple perspectives on a topic or book, in order to provide a rich context and present an aesthetically appealing product for an audience. Your multigenre project should reflect the following:

A focus: In this case, your novel and any ideas associated with it are the focus of your multigenre project.

A coherent organization: Items should be created and organized in order to lead readers through the project, to help them understand your focus and purpose.

• A series of seemingly unconnected pieces, though they may share a similar topic, will not result in a strong multigenre project. Instead, readers should experience a sense of cohesion, a sense of connection and transition between each generic document in the project.
• You can create coherence through transitional pieces between genres, your table of contents, etc. Explanations linking each piece work well too.

Develop a theme: Your entire MGP should be presented in a theme that best fits your purposes.

• Some students have “packaged” their MGPs as a scrapbook, a photo album, a newspaper, a magazine—the options are endless! (Your choice should reflect your understanding of the novel.)

Options You May Choose From…

As you look through these options, think about how you can take them beyond just what’s described here on the page. You need to take this project seriously and everything must be School Appropriate!

1. Video Producer:create a video using Windows Live Movie Maker to focus on the themes and/or character(s) from the novel. Use quotes (page #s) from the book to support the images you chose. Similar to the example video I did for the Senior videos.

1. Analysis: write an essay that follows the 5 paragraph essay format that focuses around how “everything affects everything.” You must use support from the novel. No 1st or 2nd person.

1. Poet:Create a poetry book. This can focus around 1 character or all of the characters of the novel. Find at least 10 poems that represent character(s) from the novel and you must write at least 1poem that is in the book. Each poem should have a written explanation (at least a paragraph per poem) of how it represents the character(s).

1. Editor:Design a Newspaper or Magazine focusing around the events in the novel. Include local news, an advice column, classified ads, a fashion column, gossip column, Reader’s opinion column, sports news, recipes and restaurant reviews, announcements, weather, a crossword, comics, etc.

1. Social Media: create a website, Facebook page or twitter account for 1 more of the characters in the novel. It should represent the character(s) clearly and there must be visual and written aspects in the project that are true to the character(s). You will also have to provide a 2 page paper explaining the choices you made (pictures uploaded, interactions with other characters, “about me” section, etc.)

1. “Paper Bag” Report: Pick 1 or more characters from the novel. Include in your paper bag 10 items of significance to the character(s). Decorate the paper bag to represent the most important theme or lessons. Write a paragraph for each item, telling why you chose the items and how they are significant symbols of the character(s).

1. Scrapbook: Include drawings, photos, letters and other memorabilia related to the novel. You can also include other items that would be consistent with Hannah’s character that may or may not be mentioned in the novel. For example, you can include pictures of the family, the poems that she wrote, a movie ticket, her report card, articles from a newspaper, etc. For each item include a 1-2 paragraph response about why you chose each item and how each is an important symbol of Hannah.

1. Music Producer:Use a computer program or draw/paint an original CD cover depicting one of the themes in 13RW. On your CD, include a compilation of 15 songs you feel best represents the most important scenes of the novel. Put together a report of your songs including the artist, title, lyrics and a minimum one paragraph explanation of why you chose each song to represent the event. You may also burn a CD with these songs on it.

1. T.V. Reporter: Conduct an interview with any character of your choice from the novel. Write 10 questions that will give the character the chance to tell his or her story about a specific incident from his or her point of view. You may ask questions, challenge a situation, express a complaint, or make a suggestion. Then answer the questions in the persona of the character you chose, using insight into the character and details from the story to support your response. There must be a typed transcript of the interview and you can also act the interview out and record it as part of your assignment if you choose to do so.

1. Creative Writing: If you didn’t like the way the novel ended, then re-write what happens to Clay and the other characters. Another option is to write from one of the subplot characters and when they receive the tapes in the mail. Write their story and how they develop as a character as they listen to the tapes.
